P4 cooler?

Hi,

My Pentium 4 temps were like 43C idle and 49C under load. Now i've always wanted to buy a new cooler but never had chance. Today the platic bit the P4 cooler attaches to snapped. I've removed the backing plate. If i were to buy a new cooler, would it come with a backing plate? What cooler do you recommend that will keep my temps low and is pretty quiet? what sort of decrease in temps can i expect over the P4 standard one?

Also, if i were to apply artic silver. how would i remove all of that existing stuff on my PC from the previous thermal pad? Do i NEED to?

Hi David. I'd suggest the Alpha Pal,(whatever the # is), Check www.2cooltek.com Thats where I got mine. It replaces the entire intel setup. Now, on to the Actual problem you have: To have an idle temp like you have, you have piss poor ventilation from the intake and exhaust fans on the box you are running on. Or, your computer box is too close to a heat duct. Make sure= box isn't Real close to a heat duct,2= you have at Least 1 80mm fan drawing air in on the lower front of the box, and 1 80mm drawing air out the rear of the box,Besides the power supply.

Depending on what cooler you get, it may come with it's own retention bracket and plate.
To get the old thermal stuff off, scrap off excess with a credit card (or other flat edge that won't scratch) and then do a wash with alcohol (rubbing, not the kind you drink :beer. You should remove the old stuff, especially if it's a different kind of thermal compound.
The AS website has instructions on how to clean/prep your heatsink before application of Arctic Silver.
