P4 Aux connector power alternatives?

Is it possible to use an alternative source for powering the 12V P4 aux connector?

My powersupply only puts out 5A average on the 12V rail with a 6.5A peak. Unfortunately, very few alternatives exist for 12V DC-DC powersupplies and this was the best I could find for car use. I could wire the aux to the car battery or free socket which would have plenty of amps, but the input voltage could vary as much 8-15V depending on load and alternator. Do you think the onboard mb regulators will hold up? Any other solutions before giving up on the P4 and trying something will less power demand?

Thanks.

Thanks anyway.

DC-DC power supplies are hard to come by and more expensive than most high end AC-DC designs. OpusSolution makes one specifically designed for vehicles, with startup and shutdown controllers. But, it is rated at a mere 150W, not enough to satify new power hungry CPUs.

Other commerical DC-DC solutions lack the startup/shutdown controllers. When starting the car, the PSU will give out and the computer will reboot and will not automatically shutdown when the car is turned off until the battery dies. An AC inverter can be used to power a regular AC-DC ATX supply, but the same problems occur and waste alot of energy in heat dissipation.

Let me try to ask the question another way.

Is it possible to use 2 power supplies, one to power the peripherals (cd, hd, mb) and the other to power the P4 aux?
