Hey all... I just set up my P4 rig lastnight, and after a while of software installing and rebooting, Windows just restarts after like 10-15minutes uptime!

Here are my spes:
Intel P4 2.4 Ghz with 533fsb
Antec TruePower 380W PS
Asus P4S8X - bios rev 1003a (what the board came with)
Corsair 512MB DDR333 PC2700 Cas 2
1x Quantum 30Gig fireball IDE 7200RPM
1x WD 60Gig IDE 5400RPM
1x Maxtor 80Gig IDE 7200RPM
Liteon 32x CDRW
(configured as Quantum Pri1, Maxtor Sec1, WD Pri2, CDRW Sec2)
Pioneer 305S Slot load dvd scsi
Hauppauge WinTV-D
Adaptec 2930U scsi card
Geforce 3 TI200
and a generic 56k modem

I'm not overclocking, so in the bios, most of the settings are set to defaults (2400mhz with no changes in fsb/voltage). My ram settings are set to BYSPD (which i believe are 2337, they are grayed out) and I have it set to Synchronous (previously performance) STILL Giving errors.

I don't know why it keeps shutting down/restarting, all the software I currently have worked fine with my last computer, and the only software loading/running before it restarts is Asus Probe, DU MEter, Winamp, NAVCE, and StyleXp.

If anyone knows why this happens, please lemme know.. thanks!
( i think it may be with the ram settings). BTW : CPU Temps are 40deg C, MB temps are 31deg C.

Power Supply is my first thing i think that might do this. My case came with a 350w and i know it wont be enuf for a Pentium 4 cause i have the Same motherboard but i say upgrade the PS ..to a 400w one

I would also check your 12v and 5v rail readings using the bios hardware monitor. 12v should be 11.75-11.9. 5v about 4.9-5.05. I'm using a 300 watt enlight ps, which is barely adequate.

Try checking your voltages as O1die said, esp. your DDR and VCore thru the BIOS. I have 2 648 boards and on both I had to up the DDR and Vcore voltages to get them where they should be. VCore on both was reading 1.43-1.45 , on the Asus board I had to set VCore to 1.6 to get readings in 1.50-1.52 range. DDR was at 2.42 and had to set at 2.6 to bring them up to 2.5X. The 5v & 12v on both are dead on the money. Otherwise try slowing the RAM down to CAS2.5 or so

I updated the bios to the 1004.002 beta bios, and besides the VCore, the other readings are dead on.. The Vcore varies (sometimes it's 1.5 other times its 1.44) Like disappointed said. Where do you read the DDR voltage at? ( I can't load windows).. Also my Ram settings are set to auto @ byspd (2337) on Synchronous. I tried reinstalling windows, and now it just freezes and says 39 minutes (for 6 hours). I'm testing my memory with Memtest 86, and so far there are no errors.

I was wondering if any of you haveing sudden reboot problems would mind ready this thread.

http://www.asusboards.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24000

you may find it interesting.

if you don't wanna follow the link, heres the basic idea

load either Asus Probe (off the driver CD ) or motherboard monitor ( http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ ) and watch your Vcore at idle and under load. if your board is like mine your Vcore is fluctuateing by more that 10% under heavy load. on several of the reboots I have had most happen under load and my Vcore hits 1.38 ( set in bios to 1.5) and even when I set my voltage to 1.55 it will drop to 1.44-1.41. not looking good

Thankyou for your time,

I updated the bios to the newest beta bios (1004.002) and my vcore is reading 1.55. Anywhoo, I'm running Memtest86, and it's giving me a bunch of errors, meaning it's either teh board or the ram. From what it looks like corsair either sent out a sh*tload of bad chips (alot of people wiht 2700XMS series are having this problem), or the board is having problems. I'm using memtest and checking if the errors are the same in different banks. Maybe this will tell if it's the board.

ASUS has some problems with other boards also. Like my new P4b533-E which does the same. A different PSU fixed almost all of the bugs, but I tried three of them before finding the best suited for the unit. It's sad the largest MB manufacture blames RAM instead of admitting to poor quality. Back to ABIT for me.:disgust:
