P4 Antec Aria running too hot?

I have an Antec Aria case with a LGA P4 511 2.8ghz in it. I have installed a new coolermaster heatsink with/ 3 heatpipes and the coolermaster fan:


With SMART cooling: Idles at 54-62 degrees C

Without SMART cooling: Idles at 44-50 degrees C

I cannot get a bigger cooling device cause the coolermaster barely fits underneath the HTPC PSU


I didnt even run Prime 95, because it got up to 65 degrees c in 40 seconds.

Are these hot temps for a LGA775 P4?

The Antec has no intake fans, only a 120MM fan built into the HTPC psu. Should I get a new case?

I'm kind of partial to the PC-60 because of cooling air flow. My AMDs at load are around 44C.
I've changed all my case fans with Yate Loons and added a 120mm Yate loon to the top of case.
The aluminum case helps to disipate heat better than steel.

The mobo tray and front fans help cool whole system.
The front intake fans cool the hdds as it swirls around them before proceeding inwards.
I use a slot fan to cool my GPU.

The Aria chassis has a horrible design for what it's worth. If you want a replacement with similar diminsions, try the X-Qpack. It's definetly a better design than Antec/taiwanese EZ-Bake oven.

My Aria is running super cool on one fan.....the PSU is your problem. It has terrible airflow, and blocks the use of a modern (bigger) CPU heatsink. With an external PSU, or the setup I'm using, your problems will be solved. Trying to run the thing stock is futile, unless you use a very low-power CPU.

From looking at pics of the Aria, I would agree with Bluefront- that is just an awfully small and cramped case for a Prescott. In my experience, the Prescotts do run hot, and you will find most users report load temps in the high 50s to mid-60s, unless they are using one of the larger aftermarket coolers and have sufficient cool air intake for the CPU HSF. I have a Scythe Samurai Z (a compact 2-heatpipe cooler) on a 3.0 Prescott in a Praetorian mid-tower case; at full-blast the CPU loads at 60C, and lowering the RPMs by 30% increase load temps to 63C. Idle is 43C. Room temp is 23-24C, case ambient 29-30C.

In a smaller mini-tower case (Antec 1605), the same setup ran at ~55C full-load with the fan on full. So, even though this case was smaller, it actually kept the CPU cooler. I suspect that this was due to the Antec having a side intake hole (no fan), while the Praetorian has solid side panels. If I run the system in the Praetorian with the side panel off, CPU temps drop by ~5C at load, confirming this possibility. On the other hand, the GPU actually runs hotter with the side panel off, as the wind-tunnel effect is lost.

Bottom line- you really need a good cooler AND plenty of fresh airflow to keep a Prescott cool. On the other hand, the P4 Prescotts can take the heat pretty well.
