P4 and SETI

How fast should my system do seti? (right now it's actually only at 2.4ghz, it's the main system in my rigs) I'm running cli along with UD, but they both seem to be running at close to 100% cause of the hyperthreading. It seems to take be between 2.5-4 hours, does that seem about right? My old athlon got them done in usually below 6 hours, so I expected more of a speed increase...is it that P4 isn't so great at SETI? TIA

Since you're running both I would say that about right. If you was just running seti it would be around 3.5 hours a piece but you could do two at the time so you would do around 12 a day at least that's what mine does

Actually, if you run two instances of SETI on a HT P4, you'll get some of the best SETI performance from "ONE" cpu available. My 3.2GHz P4 800 with Dual Channel DDR400 gets around 17WU's per day. 🙂

The UD is competing with SETI, so you'll not get as much as you would with two SETI's! 🙂

(Oh, and my average is around 2:49 right now with 2 instances running = approximately 1:24.5 per WU! 😀)

Again with that...😉

Stop trying to make your rig sound better. Each WU is taking 2:49, but you're getting 2 WUs done in the same amount of time, but it's not 1:24 per WU.

😉

j/k, but that does annoy me slightly 😉

Ok...let's say 24/17 = 1.4117647058823529411764705882353 hours Between units! 😛

That's how long it takes my CPU to put out one WU! 😛

My slightly optimized 2.4c P4 is averaging 16wu/day😛

My dual Barton 2500+ is averaging 18 wus/day🙂

Your system is about right for a non optimized 2.4c. 🙂

You know if you used my special SETI Driver setup, your system will probably get 14 wus/day😉

LOL...don't believe him. He thinks that everyone's SETI setup runs better under his "Special E-mail setup"...i.e. IsOs account! 😛

Really, your system is doing very nicely running SETI and UD. The thing on HT enabled P4's (as confused likes to point out), is that they produce 2 WU's in that amount of time if running 2 instances of SETI. You're running one of SETI and one of UD. The only way you could get a large amount of WU's (not great time as Confused points out! 😉 ), is to run 2 instances. 🙂

Good Luck

How do I run 2 instances of SETI at the same time?

By using something like SETI Driver 🙂

Do I just bump the Maximum Processes to 2 in SETI Driver?
Yep 🙂
You also have 2 make sure SETI Driver has atleast 2 WU's cached.

is that hyperthreaded? and not just oc'd....

oooh oooh hyperthreaded, and oc'd would be very nice indeed 🙂
