Hi all. I am currently running a P4 3ghz Northwood 800fsb. I recently aquired a 3ghz Presscott and knowing about the presscott running hotter, should I even waste my time replacing the 3ghz northwood to the presscott? from many articles I have read it basically says the northwood is better, but being I got the presscott for free do you guys think I should swap? Thanks. BTW, I am a hardcore PC gamer and do not overclock at all, ive read the presscott works better if overclocked. I dont plan to, but just want to know if I should waste my AS5 and swap or should I just sell it.

They are pretty much the same unless you are into media encoding or Doom 3, both of which the Prescott excels at.

Even then, I don't think the difference is worth the trouble of swapping them out. Heat is not really a factor to worry about, despite what you may have heard.

I would sell the Prescott.

What about future progs and sse3? or is it all smoke and mirrors? Most likely we will be at 6ghz when sse3 is utilized. I'll probably sell. Thanks guys.

Well, the SSE3 is providing a little boost now, but I still don't think it's worth the trouble of swapping processors. I doubt you would notice the difference between the 2 chips.

What stepping is it? The D0's run about the same temps as the Northwoods. If you are running at the stock speed then keep the Northwood. If you are planning to overclock it, then go with the Prescott. 3.0C usually go to around 3.6~3.7, a 3.0E should get 3.8~4Ghz

Prescotts run better just at higher clock speeds. 3.6+ is were they show their performance.

Personally, I'd use the prescott. Its got 1mb cache, sse3 and lacks nothing the northwood offers.

Sell which ever will get you the most $$$. Performance is too close otherwise.

I do encode a lot of video to DVD, would the Prescott improve my times?

Except performance.

Prescott is faster in some encoding Oyeve, but it's slower in everything else (except doom3). For pretty much every other game, Northwood outperforms Prescott.

Divx does support SSE3. Looking at benches, it looks like Prescott might give you 3 frames per second over Northwood.

You'll have to forgive THUGSROOK. My pupil does not put enough emphasis on it.

SELL THAT F^*$&NG POS!

By the time SSE3 games and programs are out for general use. Intel might even have SSE4 or 5....
Since it was for free... I'd be more than happy to relieve you of it... how does 75 bones sound?
