Hey,

I am looking to purchase this CPU from newegg.

It is the Intel LGA775 Pentium 4 550 3.4 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail. At the bottom it says: "Notice: This Processor Works with SocketT (LGA775) Motherboard ONLY!"

When I searched LGA775 on newegg, the only motherboards that came up were ones that had like:
1 x PCI Express x16
1 x PCI Express x1

and only a few AGP with PCI ones, but didnt have "925x or 915" chipset that is on the P4 box.

SO, where I am getting to, is what is a good motherboard that I can use that has AGP slots and not PCI-e? I wouldn't mind a cheap motherboard until PCI-e and DDR2 is more mainstream. Specific model/brand, and price? Thanks to anyone that can help me out!

i think ECS have combo PCIe and AGP mobos...LGA775 CPUs are designed for newer chipsets which mostly comes in PCIe... im not really sure if there are LGA775 platform mobos running on AGP only... did you try searching mobo companies like asus? msi? abit? gigabyte? ecs?

There are several motherboards based on i865 that are LGA775. These are AGP and DDR1 based and should be what you are looking for. Newegg has several of these, and they are actually the first ones listed when you look for 775 motherboards. The Abit AS8 or Asus P5P800 are probably the best bet and can be had under $100. DFI also has a i875 based 775 board that should be slightly faster and has a few more features, but is $75 more and probably not really worth the extra cash.

looks like Abit AS8 is the way to go. Should work flawless until the pci-express and ddr2 is more mainstream, don't you think?

The 915 chipset supports DDR and DDR2, so you could still use DDR memory on some 915P boards, like the ABIT AG8 or ASUS P5GD1. There are also some boars based on this chipset that support both DDR and DDR2 memory, though you can use only one type at a time.

As for the video card, I think the market is better for PCI-E cards already. For example, for $130-140 you can get a GeForce 6600 and for $180 a 6600GT; there's no AGP card that beats these two at these prices.
If you want a video card that is a little cheaper there's the Radeon X300 from Sapphire for $82. It performs exactly like the 9600, but is $20 cheaper (comparing Sapphire cards @ newegg).

I would go with PCI-E and DDR if I were upgrading today.

With the new technology behind PCI-E, arent the cards pretty "wussy"? Or is there a lot of support/drivers for them? I don't game at all anymore, I just have my ATI Radeon 9500 pro AGP for my 2 primary monitors, and a Radeon 9200se PCI for my 2 other monitors.

The AS8 is inexpensive, and seems to be the way to go for right now. However, there is a lot of talk about the P4C800-E Deluxe, but it is twice as much.

Do you have to go LGA775?

I have a 3.4 Prescott but using socket 478 on an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe mobo. So far its a great board, does AGP 8x Pro, etc .. works like a champ :)

well, I am purchasing one of these chips that is LGA775 from the boards here. So essentially I guess I have to go LGA775 :)

There are also a few I915 boards that have a AGPe or GEAR slot. Its basically on AGP slot that works on the PCI bus. These are decent boards to use to transition slowly to the new PCIe, DDR2.

The only problem is that the slot is basically a bit crippled, I saw about a 40% reduction in performance with my AGP card.

men P4C800 mobos by ASUS still kicks ass and i'll probably find no reason to switch to newer technology just yet... you can still squeeze the hell a lot with your P4C800 and i wish i owned this board... :(

Personally I would stick with the S478 mobos for now, they perform just as well as the current LGA775 boards.

DFI Lanparty 875P-T

It seems like it's the best 865/875 - 775 mobo available right now. I haven't used it, but at least it was on the top of the list when I was thinking about getting P4 530.

I have gone ahead and purchased a Abit AS8. Ony m P4 3.4ghz HT is says to make sure I get a motherboard that has Hyperthreading-enabled chipset. The chipset for the ABIT AS8 is "Intel 865PE + ICH5R"

So now my question is, will this AS8 motherboard that is in the air right now, on its way over, going to work as planned with the 3.4e?

sweeeeeeeeeeet :) Atleast until PCI-E is more mainstream, I still want a good motherboard that will use the P4 3.4e to full potential.

OKAY another question. :)

The AS8 says that the memory type is DUAL CHANNEL DDR 400/333. I currently have a gig of PC-3200 that I am selling, and looking to get PC-3500 or PC-4000. What I did notice, is that the PC-4000 that I am looking to buy is DDR 500. Is that an issue? Thanks everyone. :) Its been awhile for RAM and intel chipsets. :)

Anything higher than PC3200 is for overclocking, so unless you are gonna overclock, you should just keep your gig of pc3200.

Thanks for the reply. I sure did learn a lot about RAM this weekend. I ended up picking up a gig of Crucial Ballistix pc-3200 model # BL6464Z402 . it does like 2-2-2-6 @250mhz. I am going to sell my gig of kingston RAM now.

and yet another question: Does motherboard that are setup with 925x/915 chipsets that have DDR2 DIMM slots, will they also accept DDR RAM? Or does it just matter what the motherboard is?

DDR2 slots will not take regular DDR ram, they have a differant amount of pins, and are not compatible. Some of the 915 chipset boards have both DDR and DDR2 slots, and some have just DDR slots.
