P4 3.2Ghz or a P4 3.4Ghz, which should I go for?

I'm gonna do a P4 upgrade and their is a big price difference between the 3.2 & 3.4Ghz here in Australia, almost $225 Aussie Dollars (US$161) we always pay alot more here is Australia for our hardware. I hope to overclock the CPU and money isn't a problem, I just want to know if it's a waste going for the 3.4 or should I just go all out. The place that sells it says that their won't be a price drop on the 3.4 till August, too long to wait for that.

Each chip has it's own limitations. somtimes you can get better performance out of a "lower" frequency chip for the price or many people enjoy pushing their system to the threshold of stability.

Man I have a 3.2c that won't overclock past 3.5 ghz and I know im not limited by my board or ram. My 3.0c on the other hand hits 3.7 on stock voltage easily. I have no idea about the 3.4 but I'd save some money by picking up a good stepping 3.0c

Do not waste money on the 3.4. The premium in price for such an inconsequential speed gain is defintely not justified.

Ditto, go 3.2.

Lol ill get flamed for saying this but if you have VERY VERY good cooling (water maybe, more so phase change and above) then go for a prescott. Rmember the prescotts are meant to run upwards of 4 ghz.

As most people if you dont want that much invested in cooling then go for a northwood. The 2.4C has been know to reach incredible FSB OC's same with the 2.8C. Those 2 seem to OC the best but by no means is the 3.2 or 3.4 a bad chip.

Go with 3.4 and overclock, with good cooling can get close to 4.0GHz.

Only a 3.4E, also hes in austrailia... if he doesnt have central air, OCing is a nono.

And a 3.2E of the same stepping will do approximately the same speed with OC.

3.2C here myself. Got it up to 3.75Ghz on default (1.55) vcore. 🙂 Now I just need some good 3700 EB ram to match this cpu at 1:1 memory ratio for killer bandwidth.

What mobo are you planning on using ? you'll need a 800fsb mobo . ie p4c800e or p4p800e
If your running a 533fsb mobo then you'll have to go w/ the 3.06 (533 bus proc)

Also what memory will you use ? w/ a higher multiplier , you'll need pc3500-4000 memory.

Jose

The higher multis use lower fsb/mem.

There's like a 6% clockspeed differential, meaning you won't even notice the actual performance difference between the two (anything under 10% is negligible). Go with 3.2

If you get for example a 3.0C is has a 15X multiplier. if you want to run 1:1, then you'll need memory that can handle 15 X 245 = 3.67Mhz .
That's close to ddr500 speed. (PC4000) If your going to keep your current memory PC3200, then get a 2.4-2.8C processor and run the memory at 5:4 mem ratio.
But this all depends on what motherboard you will use.......

Jose

Well, I've gone and done it, I've just went for the 3.4Ghz (fudge it, you only live once, I'm not taking my money to the grave). Should get it this week and set it all up on the weekend. The m/b I also purchased was the abit ic7-max3. The cooler I'm using is my Alpha I currently use with my P4 2.26 CPU. Wish me luck, will keep u all posted with my results.

Nice, if you luck out on the cpu, you should easily reach 3.75Ghz. Good luck, and keep us posted! 🙂
