<----- Intel n00b

I picked up this CPU with a crappy ECS i848 board at Fry's for $250 because they were out of the Athlon 64 bundle. I couldn't even do any preliminary OCing because the board is dead, and I couldn't find much on the stepping other than the top OCer in VR-Zone's database is the same speed\stepping. It does have 30 capacitors\resistors on the bottom. Good\bad\ugly?

Also, could anyone suggest a motherboard to overclock this thing? I'd like SATA RAID, i865\875 chipset, and a price of around $100 but don't really need anything else that wouldn't be standard on boards of that caliber. I'm currently thinking Abit IS7 or Asus P4P800-E Deluxe, but I'm open to suggestions.

i'd go with IS7 because of the softmenu, gives you lots of choices for overclocking.

you really can't go wrong with either one you listed. both have same feature sets and are on i865pe chipset.

The IC7 OCs better than the IS7, and the P4P800-E is somewhere in between, unless you do the voltage droop mod to the VRM... then the P4P800-E is the best OCer.

Good to hear about the boards, I'll probably go with the Abit because of my great experience with my NF7-S. I looked at Zalman's compatability list, but just to be double sure, the Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu won't interfere with anything on either board? Anyone want to chime in about the CPU?

Generally, all 30 cap CPUs are good overclockers, they are the Gallatins with the L3 cache disabled (extreme editions)

Many go to 3.6ghz on default voltage (of course we all know this isnt garunteed, but it is common).

Nope, Intel hides all the bridges so you can't do it. The bridges would be way too small for most people to be able to connect anyways, and that's assuming the CPU survives you removing the heatspreader.

Northwood 30 Capper's are not Extreme Edition's. They are entirely different CPU cores. Gallatins are Xeons and EE's.

you should be able to over it very well since it's 30 cap which have been known to overclock better than 12 caps.

i'm using a 30 cap 2.8C SL6WT D1 stepping. 2.8 @ 3.5 default voltage.

if you wanna use i865PE mobo, i think u should get one i have. SATA/IDE RAID, Gigabit LAN, Onboard AC97, 2.2 VAGP, 3.3 VDIMM, 1.85 VCORE, all without any mods.
