P4 3.0GHz reporting 1.5GHz... confused...

I am helping a friend put together a budget P4 system. We picked up the PC Chips M952, a P4 3.0GHz 800 FSB processor, and one 512MB stick of PC3200 Patriot RAM. I have also updated the BIOS on the mobo to the latest release on the website.

The bios insists the processor is a 1.5GHz P4. What am I missing about 800MHz FSB P4's? Do they only work at full speed in a Dual Channel setup? The memory speed only shows up as 100MHz in the BIOS, and the overclocking settings only allow you to take the memory up to 133MHz (vs. the 200MHz I would expect to be default for this proc.) Well I am totally confused. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Too many years working with only AMD procs I guess.

Thanks!

that motherboard probably don't support 800mhz fsb so it is setting it to 400

ok i just saw the link you posted, which suggests it does support it
is there a setting to select 800fsb in the bios ??
you should be able to run the mem and fsb at 1:1 set to 200mhz which make the fsb 800

good luck

Thanks very much for your quick response. I figured out the problem, and it was pretty stupid: I actually had to set some jumpers on the mobo from "100MHz" to "200MHz". What is this, the stone age? I haven't had to mess about with jumpers in years. Ah well, you get what you pay for. Thanks again.

Never heard of PC Chips, and haven't used a jumpered mobo in 5 years. Why did you choose that mobo?

It was a combo deal at Fry's last weekend. We weren't trying to do any OC'ing or anything else, so it seemed like a fine deal. Might not have been the best choice though.

Pcchips is probably the worst motherboard i've ever used.
It's performance is so-so and reliability is not very good.
I've had compatibility issues and bad capacitors quite often
back when i used to use them.
It's worth paying twice the money for an Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte brand
board.

just my .02 :)

From what Ive read, Id agree. However my dad has 2 pc chips board based rigs up and running pretty stable... even though my overclocked rig is more stable. Nforce2 power :)

If your overclocked rig is more stable than a couple of non-OC'ed computers with PCchips boards in them, that just proves daveybrat right, now doesn't it?
