P4 3.0ghz processor idle at 57'C??

have an P4 3.0ghz HT running on an Intel 915 board..it is running with a stock hsf and idles at 57'C!! Is this normal? I am using a generic silver based thermal grease.

I also turned off fan control in the bios.. so the fan runs at max speed all the time..it is super loud (remember those old 60mm delta fans..yeah..that loud!!)

thoughts?

57'C does seem a little warm for idle temps, although it's probably still in the normal range for that processor. With stock cooling my old 3.0GHz P4 idled at 52'C, but I was able to reduce that to 48'C by installing a new cooler and a system exhaust fan. Still, under full load, my temps would frequently jump into the low 70s.

While Prescotts do run hot, 57c idle is deffinatly not normal. Make sure the heatsink is fully seated, those retarded plastic clips can be a pain. How much paste did you use? Too much is just as bad as not enough..

I think I am in the not enough category.. I am gonna head out and see if I can find some AS5 locally..maybe even a new heatsink
