I am not a Gamer but like to do some video capturing and editing and also wonna use this system for 3d Cad applications. My present athlon XP2500+ system is giving error messages in 3D-modelling. So, I guess it is time to upgrade.
My current specs:
Xp2500+ (it becomes unstable if I Oc to 3000+ or 3200+)
Asus A7N8XE-DX mb
ATI 9600xt
Kingston 256X2 pc3500 HyperX
WD 80gb hd etc.

Any input will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

For gaming, the 3000+ will be overall nicer than the 3.0 P4, as well as cheaper as most LGA775's mean you need DDRII and PCI-E to go with it. But in general, for gaming, a video card upgrade (if you are strapped for cash) like a 6800nu combined with a 2500+ wouldn't be too bad, although an A64 with a 6800 series GPU would be nicer.

Good point,
But as I mentioned I am not a Gamer. The only game I play is chess online. And I never had any freeze ups on that with my old system.
The main thing that bothers me in my system is when I am doing any video capturing or dvd recording I cannot open any other window on the side. Also I see my cpu usage touching 100% with only one application. I would have closed my eyes and got a P4 before but now from the reviews I have read Athlon64 is also performing really well in audio/video and 3d-rendering applications.
So, I just need some personal experiences.

Your intended usage is where the P4 is strongest so it would be a good choice.

I agree, especially since hyperthreading could be useful for the multitasking you describe.

Well, first I would do a fresh install, and check your memory and voltages. If you have bad memory or a bad PSU, you will be very unhappy when the upgrade happens, and you have the same problem. You shouldn;t be having all those strange things happening.

If you do upgrade, the 939 pin Athlon64's are about the same as the Intel in rendering (depending on the application), and faster at most other things, so I would go that way. Even if you decide on Intel due to HT, I would go socket 478, and the c processor.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys.
I did a fresh install last week when I screwed up the drivers and my windows would not show me both of my pio dvd drives.

agreed

D'oh, I read "Gamer" and not the "not" part, yeah, the P4 would be nice but not necessarily LGA775, find a HT 478 instead, don't buy into DDRII and PCI-E, let the rich boys and Dell buyers make the headway first.
