I agree the stock cooler does makes too much noise for me as well... when it speeds up it shook the whole case - had 4 of them and trying other coolers now.
Its looks as the one CPU fan I like the most runs right about where it should then (31C/87f idle & 121f under heavy load)...
...fannertech/speeze cooler - the fan is very quite (makes much less noise than my built-by R9800 Pro even) , the 3 pin power cable is wrapped (like antec & enermax power supplies power cable), and of course we can get them at a low cost ($10 or so) & performing much better therms than the P4 stock coolers I have/had.
My friend has a stock cooler as well. It's pretty dang loud but it keeps his temps under 57C under load. He idles at around 46-48C. It's kinda too hot, but he doesn't wanna spend anymore money on the computer. :-/
Hmmm I think it's the CPU dude... Pentium4's these days put out so much heat, so it's normal to get temps like that. I heard that Zalman 7000Cu is better than SLK900 and I think it's more popular right now. I might be wrong though...
These chips will run hotter than non HT enabled CPUs because more of the silicon is being used at once when HT is enabled.
Use more of the chip at a time == more heat.
I had a 2.6 OCed to 3.1 with a AVC Sunflower cooler and 70mm delta fan (3500 RPM) it runs cooler than the 3.0 with Swiftech MCX-4000 and 90mm panaflow that I now have.
Oh yeah, I've since realized that the temps reported by my motherboard are entirely inaccurate. They are all about 7-10C too high. It's a known issue. So my temps are fine, my motherboard is some busted shiz though.
