P4 3.0c OC retail / OEM? How far did you get w/RETAIL HSfan?

I'm pretty sure I want to upgrade right now from my trusty 2.5 year old P4 1.6@2.2 (no HT), 512MB RAMBUS system.

It looks like 3.0c P4's are/were good overclockers. I can't tell if people are still getting M0, or 30 cap cores these days cuz I see no new buzz on the boards.

I wanted to try for a 3.4-3.6 g overclock, but I'm not sure if the stock fan would fry the chip. I like retail boxed sets and don't feel like spending $40 for a heatsink, $8 arctic silver, etc. (been there, done that ages ago), so
how far have some of you gotten on retail HS fans?

If I did decide to use the stock HSFan but removed the heatpad and used some OCZ 5+ paste, would I void the 3-year warranty?

Also, I was thinking of going with 1GB Simpletech Nitro PC3700 to allow for up to 466MHz RAM. Do you think that's too conservative? (Or just sucky RAM in general?)

Or, after all that... Would it be better performancewise to get a 2.8c OEM ($40 less), a nice heatsink (makes up for CPU savings), and better RAM and go for something like 3.5Ghz, 500Mhz RAM (PC4000)? Or is this unlikely on a 2.8c? And is 500MHz DDR going to help a lot over 466MHz (probably what I would shoot for on 3.0c). The only reason I'd even consider a 2.8c over a 3.0c is the higher RAM speed. I don't care otherwise.

Thanks,

Augie

Well, I'm impatient and impulsive, so I did it, but I hope it wasn't the wrong choice...

I ordeded from Newegg:

Pentium 4 3.0c 800Mhz Retail Box $219
1GB Simpletech Nitro PC3700 pack $291 - $40 MIR = $251
Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard $109
OCZ Ultra 5+ thermal paste $6
----------
$625 - $40 MIR

I'm hoping to go to at least 233 on the FSB (to make use of the 466 PC3700) and get 3.5Ghz out of this rig.

Best case scenario, I'll probably try for 3.7Ghz @ 250 FSB, 500 DDR -- I read a review of the Simpletech Nitro PC3700 that took it to 503MHz, though I don't want to push the limits...

As for cooling, I thought I'd try the stock fan with the OCZ Ultra 5+ before splurging on some big $$$ uber-fan. Even though technically OCing should void the CPU warranty, is it definitely going to void it if I scrape off the heat pad and use the OCZ instead?

Anyway,
