hi guys,

i was wondering if any of you have used this cpu while running Windows 2000 Server. This might be in the wrong forum, but wanted to know from those who own this cpu and have tried it out at home or work. With prices of the retail chip lower than $400, the price aint too bad to make it worth giving it a shot, and seeing how well HT really does. At first, I wanted to use a p4-2.66 cpu that costs ~ $225, and didnt want to spend the extra money for a true dual-processor system with the pricey Xeon chips. However, for $175 more, i wonder going to a HT enabled chip would be worth it, and help out in a server environment (where there would be 10 machines accessing the server).

Any feedback, info, or personal opinions would be greatly appreciate!

tia,

Really depends on what you are planning on doing with this server. Of course the HT enabled processor will perform better than a single.

I seemed to remember reading somewhere that W2K does not support HT... I could be wrong... (wouldn't be the first time... :))

HT works on w2k server, we have it at work. although for a workload of 10 machines, a 2.66GHZ is more than enough. spend the money on RAM instead

Unless the server is running a Database and/or Exchange (or a game server) - I would think that a 3.06 would be overkill. You are probably better off going down to a 2.4GHz and getting more memory or investing the money in the disk system/ RAID controller. You probably don't need more than a gig of RAM - even 512MB is more than enough for a file server, small print server or DC.

thanks for the responses guys. appreciate all the info and input. for those wondering, the server will contain the following specs:

1 gb ram PC 2700
2x WD 80gb hd (8mb cache)
Promise FastTrack TX2 raid card
Adaptec 2940 U2W scsi card
SCSI DDS tape backup
all the other goodies like video, sound, lan...

and thus, my choice between spending $175 more to go with a 3GHz cpu or not...

decisions, decisions.... ;)

i also read that for sure HT is only supported under windows XP, and maybe linux, but not any version of w2k. and it was a reputable source, like anantech, or xbitlabs, etc..

and having it at work using w2k server doesn't mean HT is supported.

hmmm, that is interesting to note. if HT isn't fully supported under Win2k, then i wont even bother getting that cpu, and will just stick to the p4-2.66.

any other win2k p4-3.06 HT enabled cpu's? :)
