I've got these two chips to choose from for my LAN party rig I'm putting together. One of the two is going on eBay. They both sell for the same price on ebay... $100 roughly.

I am going to OC the chips a little bit, and just want to know if one is better than the other. I'd be happy with just 3.0GHz.

I'm guessing the 2.8 has a just high multiplier or something... is that the only difference?

Any other suggestions? Thanx.

The 2.8 might overclock a little higher, but the multiplier is only the main real differance between the 2. Both of them should have no trouble with 3ghz, probably get to 3.2 or even 3.4 with decent cooling.

I've thought about selling both and getting that 3700+/Mobo combo on newegg for $200 but I'd rather just use one of these chips plus the mobo I already have and use that $100 to buy a 6600GT or something.

Will these 533 chips reach 800FSB at all?

only if you were thugs and it were an M0 chip ;)

2.66ghz = 20 x 133, so 20 x 200 = 4000mhz = 4.0ghz
2.8ghz = 21 x 133, so 21 x 200 = 4200mhz = 4.2ghz

not likely w/ these northwoods :(

haha drop mult? haven't been done since back in the pii/celeron era. only way to do that is with an ES

OK so I'll keep the 2.8... The 2.66 is already on eBay.

One last question, I was planning on using a spare Zalman 7000AL-CU Cooler for this chip, will that be sufficient (on its higher 2400RPM setting) to cool the chip OC'd to 3.0-3.2ish GHz?

The Zalman should be perfectly fine, Northwoods didn't have the heat problems that Prescotts do, especialy the non-HT versions.

so what's the point of overclocking the chips alone if you don't have a good mobo to go with it, or do you?

edit: you can get a Celeron D for the same price and match an Intel Extreme Edition @ 3.xx GHz which is far better at overclocking then the Northwoods

hehe, It's got a decent mobo. It'll be sitting in an Asus P4800-SE. I've always been able to get a least a 10% stable overclock with this board.

As per the Celery-D:
a) I already have the P4 chip, so no need to go out and purchase something inferior
b) I'm not a fan of the P4 Celeron Chips regardless of their overclocking potential. Plus the Cel-D's I've seen run pretty durn hot at 2.93 GHz.
c) It's a Celeron...

Friend:"Hey Man what are you gamin' on over there?"
Me: "Dude, its got this friggin sweet Celeron chip..."
Ex-Friend: :laugh: ...Walks away, his laughter can be heard in the next room
Me: :confused:
