Hey, I got this off of pricewatch:
P4 2.53GHz for $307.75 from PCProgress.com.
Has anybody bought stuff from them before? The next lowest price is like 400 bucks, so I'm thinking maybe this isn't for real.

Maybe they are just jumping the gun on the latest intel price cuts. After August 25th, the 2.53 is suppose to drop to around $240 bucks.

Last I heard sept 1st they are gonna cut it WAY down...

If I didnt need a comp for college, I would wait for late september and get a 2.53 for like $200

Oh yeah most def wait 10 days if possible for 2.80GHz P4 to push others down.

But if starting from scratch for personal system, AMD XP 2600+ is coming out tomorrow but then again why not save a couple of hundred $ by buying midlevel Athlon XP and double hard drive space or buy a nice video card instead.

Does anyone know if the 1.6a's will go down? Those are the true oc gems and only go up, the direction that pc prices don't go!

Intel discountinues Intel 1.6 already so I wonder how they're gonna drop the price.

It's a pretty good damn chip for oc but I think 1.8 is now starting to produce good quality OC chips also

Mine is running at 2.7. I think I can push it more once I got my Corsair from PC Progress

Where did you hear about the 2600+ ? I searched on Google and couldn't even find out so much as a rumor about it. I guess I'll know tommorow, but the XP upper end prices fell $49 on the 2200+ and I hope they continue more so I can upgrade from my 1.4.......

i remember someone writing this on one of the threads. you guys have to remember that it's harder to oc when the multiplier is higher such as the 2.53. for example, you can oc the 1.6a to 2.4 relatively easily. but the same percent increase in the 2.53 is 3.795. there is no way you're going to be able to achieve this... the higher multipier makes it harder to make such a drastic oc, so for those of you thinking of oc'ing 2.53, don't think you can get to the same increase as the 1.6a. you'll prolly hit 3.0ish... but i don't know... i could be wrong.

However, contradicting news just came out at http://www.overclockers.com/ where you can also find out reasons why buying 2200+ isn't such a good idea when it may be better to buy a dirt cheap $60 Palomino XP and stick it in your current mobo to hold you over till Clawhammer (3400+) comes out in December/January since you talking 'bout spending big bucks on upper end XPs. Huge improvements to your machine could be made by saving $ on buying hardly noticably slower CPUs now. Also, Clawhammer will require a new mobo since it's a new generation of CPUs and 2200 isn't. New generation will love you long time, 2200 won't.

AHA:
"The most dramatic drop on Pentium 4s will be the 2.53GHz Pentium 4, a price decline of 62%, and that price will be effective August 25th, in readiness for the 26th of August launch of the 2.80GHz and other chips such as the 2.6GHz and 2.66GHz processors.
Desktop CPUs which will drop in price are the 2.53GHz parts downward, with the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 disappearing from Intel lists."

The last AMD Thoroughbred core CPUs 2400+ and 2600+ indeed came out today. Athlon XP 2700+ with Barton core and 333MHz front side bus (FSB) comes out in October.
All your Barton is belong to us.

really, Anand said that the 2400+ and the 2600+ were "essentially paper launches".

Anyone know if the price cuts reach into the mobile market also?

Oh yaa:
Estimated Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M price declines:
2.2 GHz Product Launch
2.0 GHz 45%
1.9 GHz 40%
1.8 GHz 43%
1.7 GHz 29%

As for "Anand said that the 2400+ and the 2600+ were "essentially paper launches."
That's ridiculous. AMD's not going to stand still while Intel launches the 2.8 giger.
It's speculated that Intel's set up to use up all their ammo since the only other big release for a long time would be 3.06GHz in late 2002 as 3.2GHz Prescott isn't due till fall of 2003 at the latest. I'd go with AMD.

They are in fact paper launches, but AMD is supposed to be shipping them out to ALL retail and oem channels in September (early to mid I believe).

I want to perphaps just buy a Althon 1900 XP 0.13 micron thoroughbred? I thought I read 1700, 1800, 1900, 2000, 2100 thouroughbreds would be coming out? Anyone know if that'll happen or is it only going to be 2200, 2400, 2600 and up? Or they just skipping all those releases and just gonna release the Barton in those speeds with 512KB cache?

the lower speed Tbreds are already showing up in Japan, the thing is there is now two versions of the Tbred core, 1 and 2 (2 being the newer, higher clocking version with an added layer). You won't know which one you'll get until you check out the cpu id string.

quick q: what does the term "paper launch" mean?

Paper launch in essence is when a company releases a product that hasn't yet reached mass manufacturing and only a few select companies/press receive the actual product. Usually the product comes out to everyone within a month or two of the paper launch. Intel used to do this when lagging behind AMD (1ghz P3, 1.13ghz P3 that didn't even work, etc) and now AMD is doing the same.

August 22 News about your question:
"The slowest Thoroughbred will be a 2000+. AMD would then have three different processors at 2000+: the original Palomino XP; Thoroughbred Revision 1 2000+, and Thoroughbred Revision 2 2000+."
