P4 2.53 safe to run at 1.7volts?

There seems to be some controversy when a P4 is running at 1.7 volts if it's dangerous or not.
In order to get my 2.53 to hit 3ghz I need 1.7 volts in bios.
So, am I asking for trouble at this voltage level?

Edit: Cpu stats are: Stepping B0, Week 14, Costa Rica, with 8/27/2002 pack date.
Here is what I'm getting for temps and volts in Asusprobe.

Prime 95 load:
44c/111f temp and
1.664 - 1.68 most frequent voltages under load. Varies from 1.64x to 1.70x.

Idle:
30c/86f temp and
1.76 most frequent and max voltage. Does drop down as low as 1.72x from time to time and see a few 1.744's.

System stats are under cow in the systems link below. Thanks.

Not surprised to see it's an Asus board... sure, you've set it at 1.7v but the actual amount supplied at idle is 1.76v. <disclaimer>I don't have a PIV</disclaimer>, but it sounds like you're pushing it. How much do you lose by backing off .025v? I see on the system stats you can do 2.9G at 1.6v. That's pretty close to 3... run your benchies at 3, then back off a little voltage. I won't tell ;)

Enh, even 1.7volts isn't enough. It passed prime95 just fine but the NOLF2 demo crashed it. :(

Heh, oh well suppose I'll have to live with 2.9ghz. Was hoping for 3 but I don't want to fry the processor. I suspect 1.725 volts would fix it but that means it would surge up to almost 1.8 volts. :Q
Thanks, Moo!

freejack2, i've had my 2.53 for almost 2 weeks. i have a p4b533-e and samsung 2700 original.

your chip looks like it's got a little more oomph than mine. i couldn't run prime at all at 3ghz. right now, i'm at 153fsb, 2907mhz, 1.625v in bios. anything over 1.625v and it's gonna idle over 1.7v. i don't know if the chip's gonna fry at 1.7v but it does seem a little risky and while i was on my quest for knowledge, a lot of people told me to keep it under 1.7v for everyday use, but for testing, heck, push the little sucker.

might want to check out this thread. starts off 1.8a but goes to 2.53 quickly :)

1.7v actual vcore reported at idle meaning load will be below that is fine....I like mentioned above have yet to see anyone toast one yet at 1.7v...I have been running mine at that vcore for 3 months now with no hiccups.

With an asus mobo you can get anywhere from .06-.08v overvolting versus what is set in bios...So if you set 1.7v in bios you are likley running 1.78v and that is pushing it. You need to run in the 1.625-1.65v range I think to keep it ticking...At that speed you likely wont seeit die or whether it took a couple years off of its life cycle...

Freejack2, if this is what i think you mean. . .

MALAYSIAN BLEND~

PROD. COD: BX80532PE2533DSL6EV

MM: 848888

FPO/BATCH: Q230A680

VERSION: A99825-001

PACK DATE: 08/28/2002

Duvie, i'm keeping mine at 1.625v in bios just in case, ya know?

also, i think my chip's overclockability is deteriorating. it used to boot up at 3ghz but now it doesn't.

but anyways, good luck, Freejack2.

Weird... What speed are you running your ram at?

BTW, 1.7V is fine. I've been using it on my 1.6A since last March...

It should be OK at that voltage/temperature, but that's the max I recommend to anyone unless you don't care and are going for extreme overclocking. By the time electromigration sets in that CPU will be dirt cheap, lol.

The 158mhz bus is a little too much for my pc2100 nanya chips so I have to clock it to 3/4 of the cpu bus.
At 2907 the nanya will run at 1:1. I suppose 2907 is good enough. :/

Juicyfruit, that's wierd. You're 2.53 is newer than mine. Should have oc'ed more than mine.

I have a 2.26 at 2890, 1.65V but I have about 10 fans in my case (3 blowing straight on the HS) and it sounds like a tornado.:(

General rule, if you've got real good cooling 1.7 volts is ok, if "ok" cooling(i.e. stock fan heatsink) then ur kinda risky
