P4 2.4Ghz or P4 1.8Ghz-A ?

Hi,

I've been picking up new parts to assemble for my next pc past few weeks. I got Asus P4S533 and Mushkin PC3000 512 MB clearly with overclocking in mind. I was about to buy P4 1.8a and go about my business, but recent P4 price drop makes me hesitate. 2.4 is about $200 and 1.8 is about $150. $50 difference doesn't seem too much.

So, my question is,

1. I heard a lot of 1.8a overclocking, but not much about 2.4. What's its potential in terms of overclocking?

2. Ok, if I give in and buy 2.4, but if 2.4 doesn't overclock very well, (in fact, I would be content if I got around ~2.8Ghz without any additional cooling or extensive tweaking), would PC3000 memory be an overkill or can it be useful sometime in near future?

Thanks.

I thought p4s533 supports both 400 and 533 FSB, if I use 400Mhz CPU and increase FSB, it makes overclocking easier than CPU's already running at 533. Am I wrong?

Ok, I like to report what I found. One thing I liked about p4s533 is that it gives me some possibility to run DDR 400 in the future. I just read the motherboard manual, and noticed that it doesn't allow CPU clock 133 AND DRAM clock 200 at the same time. (133, 166) or (100, 200). At least that's what CPU external frequency selection allows. Does it mean that 400MHZ FSB CPU is more fit into this motherboard in terms of utilizing higher bandwidth Memory? Any comment?

Your better off checking with some overclocking sites for that info. All I have gleaned is perhaps your better off with neither chip, I hear the P4 2.26 is the best overclocker since the P4 1.6a northwood. I'm not overclocking, and if that was the case with you, I'd recommend the P4 2.4 only because it's faster right off than a P4 2.26 for roughly the same price. Check with the OC'ing sites, though...

It's far better to buy guaranteed performance rather than to gamble on overclocking to do the job for you. Plus the faster CPU will likely reach a higher absolute frequency than the slower processor will, with less stress on the system as well.

I always prefer to pay a bit extra to get guaranteed performance and I highly recommend that you do the same in this situation.

Thanks for the responses.
So, overclocking aside, if I buy P4 2.4 only because it's not expensive, which one should I buy? 533Mhz FSB version or 400Mhz FSB version? I know 533 version is latest, but somehow it's a few dollars cheaper than 400 version. Are they any different performance-wise?

Again I'd rather buy the 533 FSB one instead of relying on overclocking to reach it.

Pentium4s love bandwidth wherever they can get it and the 533 MHz FSB version will be faster than the 400 MHz version.

I woould definitly go with the 2.4Ghz P4. Just like they said you are guaranteed the performance and I have heard that they overclock pretty well also. I just wouldn't take the chance with the 1.8 since the 2.4s got so cheap.
