I am getting ready to build my new rig - Ah Finally! :) My question is what would I be better off with, a P4 2.4B or a 2.53? I have read alot about the 2.4B being a great overclocker with the C1 stepping version of it. But would I see better results with a 2.53 and be more garenteed to get a C1 with a 2.53? Processor prices are going to drop in two more days so I would appreciate any advice you have?

Is the 2.53 worth the extra $50? Or can I get about the same performance with the 2.4?

btw: This may sound like a really DUMB question but, Why did Intel go with a 2.53??? They have a 2.0 and a 2.4 and a 2.8 and so on.. Why the odd number for the 2.53? Why not call it a 2.5? :)

its got a 133mhz bus... if im not mistaken, so along with a multiplier, it suppose it turns out to be 2527 mhz or something (133*19)

3.06ghz w/ HT sound familiar? but i think the 2.4b is better performance per dollar and unless u are superman which i dont think u are, you will not be able to tell the un o/ced difference

A rule of thumb is to buy the fastest processor you can afford. At the time of my purchase, I wanted to get the 2.66 but could not afford the $100 CAN difference. So I settled on the 2.53.

if you can use the 2.4B to make a reasonably useful upgrade anywhere else in your system, you should. 133MHz is hardly noticeable in today's world.

Honestly, flip a coin.

It actually has a 133.333... MHz bus so it comes out to be 2533.333... MHz in reality.

Yeah the 2.53 is kinda weird but it makes sense with the 133fsb. It was at the right price point for me when I bought my cpu. the 2.4b was 199 and I saw a retail 2.53 for $228 so it was a no brainer for me to go with the faster chip.

Hmm... thanks!
I wonder why you get those decimal points....

Is there anywhere I can read up on how clocks are actually generated?

So if the 2.4B tops out at a bit under 3Ghz then will the 2.53 go over 3Ghz quite a bit? I had my mind set on a 2.4b with all the good reports people have been giving on them but With the recent price drop the 2.53 is more attractive.

I haven't seen many reports on how much you can comfortably o/c the 2.53?

If is was your choice for $45 more, would you shoot for the 2.53??

The 2.4B and 2.53 should or could top out @ ~ the same GHz. The 2.4B will be running a higher FSB/mem speed than the 2.53 @ the same CPU speed, which would make it a touch faster, but also has more of a requirement for better memory.

3 GHz example:

2.4 @ 3 GHz = 167 FSB
1:1 mem ratio = DDR333
4:5 mem ratio = DDR417
3:4 mem ratio = DDR445

2.53 @ 3 GHz = 158 FSB
1:1 mem ratio = DDR316
4:5 mem ratio = DDR395
3:4 mem ratio = DDR421

All of the above are possible. You need VERY good memory to do DDR445. Everything else is very possiblel with a good 845PE board and good PC3200. I'd go for the 2.4B

Some of your decision will have to include which motherboard you are planning on using.

On my system there is a noticable difference using the higher fsb that you will get with the 2.4b @18X multipier. If you use a Granite Bay, or wait for the Springdale the 2.4B would definately be my choice.

If you are going with the I845E or PE, then you might want the 2.53 or even the 2.66 with the higher multipier. The price drop next week and then again in March is going to make both of these similar to what the 2.4B is right now.

Excellant advice! I wil be using the ASUS P4PE Mobo. Does this make a difference?

What are the specs on the springdale and when will it be available?
