Per topic...

I have a Pentium 4 2.4gig, yet when I look at my computer properties it says that its running at 1.2gig... wtf? This is also rectified by 3dmark03 giving me approximately half the cpu points (297) as compared to others on Futuremark with a setup close to mine.

Could someone please tell me what's going on.

hmmm.. could the processor be over heating... Intel processor have thermal throttling that cut the clock frequency in half when they overheat..

Standard procedure...

=> Is the CPU fan spinning ?
=> Is the heatsink installed correctly?

fans spinning fine.

Another thing though is that in my BIOS it asks me what Cpu speed I want to have...?? WTF? I want 2.4gig just like the thing says its suppose to run at. The only options it gives me however is 1200 and 1600. Seriously, what the fock?

How can I change that... I looked in my BIOS and the option isn't there.

Also will that adversely affect my hardware? Null a warrenty?

List your mobo make and model. Look in the bios under "frequency/voltage control". Should be an adjustment somewhere for the cpu fsb. For 2.4c, set to 200; for 2.4b, set to 133.

Asus p4s8x-x w/ HT

In system properties, it give me two processors, each running at 1200mhz w/ HT enabled. -So that makes sense... Hyper Threading splits the cpu into "two".

However, when I disable HT, it says that I have only one cpu and its running at 1200mhz. Not good if your trying to play d3.

Ok, looking at my BIOS manual here... Which option do I need to modify:

- Cpu Speed
- Cpu Frequency Multiple
- Cpu External Frequency
- Memory Frequency
- Cpu Vcore set
- Cpu Vcore
- Adjust Vcore

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change the CPU External Frequency to 200 mhz. Like eveyrbody said it looks like it's running on a 100 mhz fsb...and if it's a 2.4C (800 fsb) it would be 12 x 100 = 1200 mhz....which is exactly what your problem is. :)

Ok, I just looked at my BIOS again... CPU External Frequency is setup really WIERD. It doesn't give me the option to select 100, 133, 166, 200, etc. Instead, it has 100-160mhz... Ya know, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, etc. etc.

Retarded. Whomever design this BIOS where morons.

I guess I should try 160? That's the highest setting available.

(and yes, its 800fsb... or so they proclaim on all of their sh!t advertising.)

If indeed you have a 2.4C cpu, your mobo is 133... Motherboard P4S8X-X

You better check the features on the hardware before buying it...

Ok, Im getting more confused by the minute.

Your saying that my cpu is faster than my mobo can support?

I know for certain that my cpu is 800fsb.

There are at at least 3 version of the Pentium 4 Processor running at 2400MHz..

Pentium 4 2400 (designed for 400MHz FSB Motherboards)
Pentium 4 2400A (designed for 533 MHz FSB Motherboards)
Pentium 4 2400C (Designed for 800 MHz FSB Motherboards)

The ASUS P4S8X-X link to spec page is supports only 400MHZ and 533MHz front side bus Pentium 4 processors...

You most likely bought a Pentium 4 2400C designed for the 800FSB motherboards.

I suggest you try and return the motherboard and get one that supports 800MHz FSB such as the ASUS P4P800-MX.

Yes the cpu is meant to operate at the bus speed of 200 (200x12multiplier=2400mhz) but the motherboard you purchased does not support the 200 bus so you will only get 12x the highest bus (166 in your case) = 2000mhz. You either need to get a motherboard that supports the 200 bus or get a P4 with a native 133/533 bus ie 3.06.

Thanks for the info guys. I do appreciate it... and understand now too!

Unfortunately, I don' think I can take back the mobo because I bought it about 14 months ago. Would newegg take it back? lol -I know their good, but not that good. lol

Nope won't take it back....BUT you could try the FS/FT forums. :)

After bumping up the fsb to 533 (from 400), I noticed a significant increase in processor power... especially in doom3. 3dmark03 also gave me a score of 392 (w/ 533) as compared to my old 297 score (w/ 400).

Thanks for the help again. I really appreciate it. :)

So you have the FSB set to 133 now? This is on your 2.4C? If so, I suggest you run the FSB as high as your motherboard supports (160). Since your CPU is a C(200FSB), running at 12x160 will give you an even better increase (1920mhz), and you know your CPU could support 160fSB, since it's designed for 200FSB.

However, the best thing to do would be to sell the motherboard and get one that could run 800FSB CPUs. Then you can be using the CPU at what it's supposed to run at (12x200, 2400mhz), and you'll see a more significant increase in performance.

p4s8x-x... I had one... I will never buy Asus again.

1) There is no FINAL driver for the motherboard because there are so many problems
2) The audio and raid have problems on this board
3) It doesnt overclock very well (although this hardly applies to you haha)
4) It caused me very much grief - switching motherboards alone netted me 1000 3dmark01 points

If you have to buy a 800FSB board, I recommend the Abit IS7-E.

Or if it is possible to do so, return the 2.4C for a 2.4B.

I'll buy the CPU! The 2.4C I have now does 3GHz easily, but I want one that may go higher.

One thing I don't get is this:

The top fsb being sold today runs at 800mhz, correct? So take the 200 and multiple it by 12 and you get 2400.... How is it possible at all to run anything higher than 2.4gig??

It's like your processor speed is solely determined by the speed of your FSB...? What the hell is the point of even selling anything according to the processor speed?? -Since that number seems not to matter in the least bit.

Hell, I bought my 2.4gig CPU thinking that I would actually be able to run it at 2.4gig.... But my only options to run it are from 1200mhz to 1920mhz.... Not 2400mhz like the damn thing says its suppose to run at.

Frustrated with this tech shtuff.

The clockspeed is determined by CPU multiplier times FSB. Higher CPU's (for example, the 2.8C) will have a higher mulitplier (14x). The multiplier's are locked, so you can't change them. A 2.8C gets 2800mhz by having it's multiplier at 14 and the FSB at 200 (14x200=2800). The higer the CPU, the higher the multiplier will be.

Yes, you bought your 2.4 to run at 2.4. The only reason it isn't running at 2.4 is because your motherboard can't support 800FSB CPUs. It only supports 400 or 533. So it's highest FSB is 160. If you get a motherboard that supports 800FSB CPUs, the CPU will be able to run at its 200FSB, which will give you your correct speed.
