Hey Guys.

I have a P4 2.4 GHz 800 FSB processor

The temps idle were atleast 46C and on full load it was about 51C

A few hours ago, my brother was playing Condition Zero and suddenly beeps just came from the computer. I checked it out and amazed myself.

I opened up SpeedFan to see the temperature at 90C !!!! Ofcourse I manually shut down the computer, and began to investigate. I cleaned the dust in my computer as well as looking inside the processor.

I found out the top part of the processor was burnt :-\

Anyway, I am using stock cooling with no thermal paste at all.

I was thinking of buying the
Arctic Silver's NEW Premium Silver Polysynthetic Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5. 3.5-gram( 1 cc. ) tube.

from NewEgg (only $7.25) to improve cooling.

My other problem is... I don't know which fan to decide on buying. There are so many to choose from. My budget is only $20.00, and I'm looking for a better fan then the one that came with the Processor.

If the Thermal Paste will do great on it's own, then would it be necessary to buy a new fan?

Thanks

Are you overclocking?? Because the stock fan is made to run that processor, using any software it will run with. Anyway, how sure are you that your processor is alright? If I remember right, 90C is actually above what Intel says a P4C will survive at. And with only a $20 budget, I would recommend you keep your stock heatsink, apply the AS5, and install two 80mm fans. One in the front as an intake, and one in the top rear for exhaust. If you already have intake and exhaust fans, you must not have had the stock heatsink installed correctly, because there are people around here running their 2.4C's at ~3.0ghz with the stock hsf.

if your board has holes in it get the Thermalright SLK-947U or the Thermalright SLK-948U

if you want extreme cooling get this fan Vantec Tornado 92mm for quiet cooling with good performence get this fan

if you want something very good less then $20 here TT Volcano 7+

Thanks for the replies.

I have a Antec 430.. 2 rear fans, and one side fan. Do I need to install a fan in the front of the case?

The good news is thermal throttling would not have allowed damage to the chip....

Here is the problem I have with the thread....

1) there is no way stock cooling heatsink on a 2.4c will only have a 51c load with a 46c idle....Just is wrong plain and simple...NOt much of a load, trust me....

Best heatsinks out there have a .17c/watt ratio which means at 2.4ghz I think it is in the 80watt range would produce a swing from idle to load of up to 14c...trsut me the stock heatsink is not that good and likely more in the range of .23c/watt....

2) The stcok heatsink should be sufficient to run a 2.4 and never hit much over 60c load in worst condition on an abit mobo...I think you are having a contact issue or forgot to remove the tape tab off of the thermal pad....

Have you recently moved the tower which may have jarred the heatsink loose???

Edit: To give you an example of the fact of point 1.....My alpha 8942 w/ 80mm ystech 50cfm fan & Swiftech MXC4000 w/ 60cfm 92mm panaflo fan both at stock 2.4c still see a temp swing from idle to real full load of over an hour to that of 10-12c....That 5c is pretty much impossible in my opinion...

Agreed, even my system, which has 2x120mm fans (one intake, one exhaust) and a high-flow 80mm side fan, and another 92mm exhaust has about ~7-8C swing from idle to 100% load. And I never even considered whether he took the "tape" off of the heatsink! I bet that's all that was wrong. If it was, Mustard, don't feel bad, we see mistakes much worse than that on a regular basis.

I just checked the stock cooling once again, and cleaned the surface.

There is NO tape whatsoever in the heatsink. After I cleaned everything... temps went 10C higher! Now it's at 60C...idle...? how the **** did this happen?

I have the following:

Antec 430
Abit is7-g
OCZ 512 DDR

any other ideas, or case fan recommendations???

Yeah, put at least one 80mm fan in the front, as an intake, and get this hsf: link or this one if you aren't going to overclock at all: link and this hsf if you want to be able to overclock alot without having to spend a fortune on a heatsink: link, along with the Acrtic Silver 5: link. Now, if you've only got a total of ~$20 to spend, I would recommend get the Aero Lite hsf along with Arctic Silver Ceramique (still VERY good paste), but slightly cheaper: link. Oh, the TT Volcano that MegaWorks linked to is a good hsf, even for overclocking, but it's for Athlon XP's, not for P4's.

You had no tape or grease on it? That's a pretty good clue to how you burnt the top of it! Stock cooling is fine as long as you use SOMETHING between the heatsink and the cpu.
