Further details: Cpu = 2.4C northwood 800fsb, motherboard = single channel 2 dimm slots.

At this price you get the motherboard for free, making it a pretty nice deal, considering the oem 2.4C alone costs $140 on pricewatch. Nearly all the latest 2.4C are M0 cores as well and great overclockers if you upgrade the motherboard at a later point.

good info. so there is no overclocking with the ecs mobo?

I'm not familiar with the board myself, but from what I've heard/read it generally doesnt like higher than 800fsb, and lacks many of the needed tweaks/voltage adjustments etc needed for overclocking. Plus the lack of dual channel would really hold back anyone pushing for maximum performance, still a good starter board till you can afford a better one, and can always be kept for a backup after upgrading. I run 2 systems and now keep a 3rd mobo/cpu ready just in case 1 goes down so my downtime is limited.

There are no FSB adjustments possible with this motherboard. I'm not sure that any VIA PT800 or PT800CE boards can heve their FSB's modified.

I dont know much about the pt800 series, but the MSI PT880 (via) they sometimes offer can be overclocked a little, on avg around 225 fsb (900fsb effective) but does not feature the stability to reach much past that.

This is a pretty good deal for a Northwood CPU - usually the p4's in these Fry's specials are Prescott cores that don't have HT and have unbearably loud stock fans.

little update on the ecs 848P-A

i got one of these boards last week with a retail 2.4A prescott for 110. This board will OC ....it just lets you type in the fsb speed. i put in 166 and now i have a 3GhZ prescott. great deal but yea the stock HsF is pretty damn loud.

ECS boards are iffy according to a lot of folks. I've had 3 boards, and they've all been pretty rock solid. Maybe it's that most folks that buy these also buy the super cheap memory? Mine's not top notch, but it's not generic either.

well they had had their NF2 and 2800+ for $109 better bang for the buck IMO $30 less for same performance.
