P4 2.0 to 3.06

what do you do with your computer?

for email , surfing the web,,,probably not

for gaming video editing etc,,, a resounding yes

but thats my humble opinion as i look to be near the top when upgradng

also if we had specs of your computer we could recomend better what upgrades may better serve you

i would say so. you'll be going from a non-HT CPU to a hyperthreading CPU. This is a link to Duvie's thread in which he proves that there is a significant performance difference when HT is enabled as opposed to when its disabled. not to mention going from a 2.0 to a 3.06 is approximately a 50% increase in clock speed. that alone will make a notable difference.

just out of curiosity, of all HT CPUs, why are you getting the only on that doesn't utilize an 800mhz fsb? will your mobo not support it?
 
have you considered getting a 2.6C and a new mobo? the 2.6C defaults on an 800mhz fsb, and can easily be OCed to 3GHz w/ the stock cooler (or any type of active air cooling for that matter) and that would raise your fsb even more. it can be had for about $94 less than the 3.06 @ newegg.com. and with that extra money, give or take $20, you can get yourself a nice mobo w/ the intel 865 chipset (like an Abit IS7 or an ASUS P4P800). i think that might be a wiser way to spend the money it would cost you to get a 3.06, IMHO...
