P4 2.0 Retail. What are the chances of hitting 2.6ghz?

I'm in the market for a new cpu. I was looking at the 1.8 and the 2.0 retail northwoods.

If I get a 2 ghz chip, what are the chances of throwing it at 133fsb or higher? Also, I would be getting an 845E board to use with this.

I would suggest that you get the 1.8A with the 18X multiplier. Your probability using 1.7vcore or less of getting 133fsb would be only about 20% with the 2.0A P4, about 50/50 of getting the 1.8A to 150fsb and 133fsb a cake walk.

Man, that sucks. I kinda guesstimated that. I guess I'll stick to the 1.8a then. I don't really want to go to 1.7 volt on the P4 chips. I heard too many stories of these suddenly dying or not working o/c'ed.

There goes that dreamer in me. 🙂

2.0a @ 2666 is hard to do without watercooling on older stepping, they tend to top out at 2.4-2.5, the newer steppings OC extremely well, (July or later pack date), you can hit 2.7-2.8ghz. The 533fsb CPUs still seem to OC the best of the pack. Especially the 2.4b and the 2.53.

I'd hate to spend all that $ on a 2.4b or 2.53 processor. 😛 Much rather overclock it to unofficial speeds. 🙂

As for getting a July pack date, where would I get one? I'd much rather buy from a reputable seller such as newegg.com, which I've been buying most of my stuff from. I also don't feel like paying a "premium" to those sites that specifically juice their customers just for the "later pack dates".

From what I have been seeing in the threads, Newegg is shipping P4 1.8A with June/July pack dates consistently.

EDIT: If you can get one of the SL63Q, then that could be a plus. I have seen reports of the 1.8A's doing 2.6/2.7 with default voltage. 🙂

I have 2 "lucky" 2.0a's. The one I'm using can do 140 fsb at 1.60v easy. I'm running it at 2640 (132 fsb) because that's the fastest setting for my particular mobo. I also have a stinker 2.0a that won't do more than 115 fsb even at 1.75v. A 1.8a is prob the safe bet.

The 2.26 is a great chip and from what I've heard overclocks well. Unfortunately, with an 845e board there is a big hole in your overclocking range. At 3:4, you'll be lucky to hit 160fsb, which means the chip will top out around 2.7GHz if your mem can do 420MHz. Go to 1:1 and you'll only be running your mem at 350MHz if you can push the chip to 3GHz. A 4:5 ratio would give you a little more flexibility.

Hm... what steppings and datepacks are these?

I would still much rather go with a 2.0 and try my luck, if there is at least a somewhat good chance of hitting 133FSB. If not, I will stick with the ol' 1.8a for now...

What about googlegear? Still waiting on the price drop next week.
