If given the choice...what should I choose?

P4 1.8A (400Mhz, 512K L2)
or
Celery 2.6 (400Mhz, 128K L2) + $30 (savings from P4 to Celery)

Building a computer for a person who doesn't do much intense gaming....this person's current computer is a P2 333...so its going to be a nice upgrade either way...but what should I do?

Can someone give me a list of pros and cons?

I would get the northwood P4 1.8a it overclocks to 2.4ghz EASY & even at 1.8 it would probably outperform the celery.

So get the 1.8a and oc that mofo to 2.4ghz. :)

Question here...I hear that the celery overclocks pretty well too?

If you're looking at celerons, why aren't you considering the Athlon XP line?

My friend is quite insistent on Intel...if you look in my rig...I am an XP person myself..=)

When people are insistent on intel, you need to challenge their views, especially if they know very little about computer hardware and are making their buying decision strictly based on brand name recognition or personal bias. In this case especially, AMD would probably be a much better choice. He could have a 2500+, a cheap Nforce2 motherboard, and 512mb PC3200 for approximately the same cost as a celeron rig.

Can you guys just answer his question please....

Kglo, do you already have the Intel platform? (Motherboard).(Rambus memory if it uses it?) If so, you would do well to get that 1.8a northwood. If you do not already have these things, then yes I would consider an AMD rig as they suggested. Their suggestions are valid although they were not asked for. Just an FYI, I like both platforms, each for different reasons. I'm using a 1.8 celery rig to type this but it's the blasted Willamette core. Cant overclock much at all.
The 2.6 celery though can probably get above 3 GHz with a slightly better than stock cooling solution.

Any howzamagoochit, good luck which ever way you go.

LOL...thank you gorillaman...it was turning into another AMD vs. Intel thread!

I agree with all you AMD backers for sure...I love the Barton + NF2 combo myself...
But I am not the one with the money here...so it probably will be an Intel solution...in which case...I would still like to know more opinions before money is spent! Thank you very much everyone..=)

You said he's not a hard core gamer, so stability is probably more important to him than absolute speed (otherwise he'd be buying a freaking FAST cpu right off the bat). Rather than buying a 1.8 and overclocking (which is never guarranteed and voids your warranty), you would do well with getting the higher clocked Celeron. It will outperform the 1.8 in everything except games or intense multimedia apps.

Thanks everyone...appreciate the help cuz I really don't know much about the Intel line of CPUs...
And yeah...this person is not a heavy gamer...so maybe the celery is a viable option....

Can anyone give me info about how "loud" an intel system is compared to AMD? Cuz I have 4 low speed case fans in my AMD rig...its quite acceptable...but I wouldn't say its silent...I hear that the Intel's don't really need much in terms of keeping case temps down (perhaps 1 case fan is enough?)...

Thanks
