i ordered a p4 1.8A from googlegear last friday and I just got it today. Since I am still waiting for the motherboard from newegg, I can't test it yet.

Product Code: BX80531NK180GSL5VJ
FPO/BATCH: 3151A234
Version: A75713-001
Pack Date: 01/24/02 🙁

What overclockability should I expect from it? I am really shocked to see I got a processor that is over 6 months old...Could anyone dissipate or confirm my fears please? I NEED TO KNOW!

I know many had problems getting the 1.8A from that old a batch to even hit 133FSB, if it were me I'd send it back, eat the restock fee, and wait till the first of the month when the price cut hits and buy a faster CPU like the 2.26B. Hey that's just me, do as you will 🙂

Just as I feared...what bad luck...

I just called googlgear and asked them if I could pay the price difference and get a 1.8A with 512 cache (0.13 microns) in exchange but they say I'd have to "swallow the restock fee" as DAPUNISHER advised. I would lose about $24...*sigh*

Can anyone think of another way to get myself a new one?
PM me.

ah, and keep posting what speeds I should expect. Maybe it isn't such a bad chip...(although I doubt it)

I would say the $24 would be worth it...the aggravation of trying to get a good overclock is not worth the $24 ... the older 1.8A did not do well the newer ones look good

wait a minute, you mean the cpu bought is not with 512K cache?

if your CPU doesn't have 512K of l2 cache, then it isn't a 1.8A. if it has 256k then it is a Willamette cored pentium IV, which would be called "1.8" without the "A". that little letter makes a big difference.

edit: considering the pack date, it is obviously not a northwood. if googlegear was calling it a 1.8A, then it was fraud. was it being advertised as a 1.8A, or just as a 1.8?

ughhhh....

you're right, it's not a 1.8A. All the ones on the list put northwood until I got to that one. I didn't notice. I was careless! It's all my fault! but why do they sell this piece of junk when they have the good one for 5 more bucks? who would have thought? To make it worse, I thought all 478 pins were northwood.

I don't know whether to kill myself or to laugh at my own stupidity. How could I screw up like this? goddamit! I can't believe it....

maybe if I spoke to some kind of manager or supervisor...I could get out of this one? I am kinda disappointed because they won't let me exchange it. I bought stuff for $300 bucks worth from them this time and over 500 8 months ago...I know they are not legally bound to do it, but it would be a long term investment. I'd be grateful and they'd become my favorite store...

But they probably won't...in that case, screw them, I'll return their damn cpu and buy a northy from newegg. even if it cost me more.

I am so mad at myself right now!!!!!!!!

imho, 15% IS terribly high. 5% would be more like a decent percentage. But what can I do...I will pay it. Not like I have any choice...

Do i have to pay for the shipping too?

Can't you tell them that you made a mistake in ordering and wanted the 512K Northwood not realizing you had ordered the 256K Williamette?.If they were good buisness people they would exchange it since its clear you mistakingly bought the wrong CPU.This is not a return but an exchange.

Your fears are more likely to be a fit of terror, if you plan on overclocking using less that 1.85v and burning it up in a few weeks.

You could do what I did when I first bought one from googlegear. Sent it back unopened rma and ordered one from newegg. Cost 15% restocking fee but the cost difference was worth it to me.

I should be receiving the motherboard from fedex in a few days. In the meanwhile, I posted a negative comment on reseller ratings (googlegear monitors them and answer the negative ones) and an email explaining my issues in detail. If by a miracle, they decide to act with class and replace it, great. If they don't, I will order one from newegg just to spite them and ship the old one to them when I receive the northwood. I have been checking on more negative comments about googlegear and I just don't like them as much. Sure, they have good prices and the best shipping. But the webpage is very slow, the processing times are excessive, the customer service is a joke, their return/exchange policies and methods are shameful, and even though I admit nobody forced me to click on the wrong cpu, The way they ordered the processors was indeed misleading. I hate to use this word but it's true.LOOK for yourself. The 1.8A is all the way in the bottom. beneath the 1.5Ghz !!! all by it's own...

I can tell you pack date alone does not mean this isn't a 1.8a...my 1.8a was packed 12/24/01 and it was 512kb .13 micron northwood....

It by the way did 2.4ghz (133fsb) at 1.65v...not bad for the early chips...
