Hi,
Im thinking of buying a new rig. Is it worth $200 for 2.0 vs 1.8? Will there be a noticeable difference? Thanks to all who reply...

Also, Should I be looking to get socket 423 or 478. Which one would be more upgradeable later on?? Whats the difference between the two??

Future system specs would be:

P4 1.8 or 2.0
256 MB PC800 RDRAM
16x DVD
16x/10x/48x CDR
32 MB Geforce GTS

I would go with the Abit TH7-II or the Asus P4T-E when it comes out. As for the cpu, I would save your money and get the socket 478 1.7 retail for about $200, and use the money you save for extra memory. Both these motherboards should permit some overclocking, so why waste your money on the faster cpu? Whatever brand or size rambus chips you get, make sure they are all the same variety and brand. I would check pricewatch and call up venders and make sure they will send you 4 matching chips for the quoted price. The socket 478 is supposed to work with the upcoming Northwood cpu.

With the Abit TH7II board and good memory you should be able to take a 1.7 to 1.9, 1.8 to 2.0, 1.9 to 2.1, and a 2.0 to 2.2 without issue. It all is subject to the quality of the cpu, board, and memory but most people have not had any issue getting a 200mhz bump in overclocking with the P4 at this time. I would buy a socket 478 chip unless you find a socket 423 for a very good deal and then you should buy a Asus P4T motherboard if you plan on overclocking. Asus and Gigabyte will have their s478 boards out shortly but the Abit board is very good if you are overclocking, if not the Intel D850MD/V boards offer excellent performance and stability without overclocking options.

To answer your question, you will not really notice the difference between a 1.8 or 2.0g chip in most applications. The s423 is a dead end solution, s478 is where Intel is headed for the next couple of years. :)

Yup - you want to be using Socket-478 - Socket-423 will end with 2.0 GHz - Socket-478 has (mostly) additional grounding pins which are necessary for the higher frequency ranges.

Socket-478 is definately the thing you want.

You also shouldn't notice TOO much of a difference between a 1.8 and a 2.0 GHz (save maybe 2 fps when DIVX-ing). Practically all games' bottleneck is the GFX-card, not the CPU :).

Hope this helps.

Another vote for S478. I'd go with TH7II-RAID or Asus P4T-E. A 1.8 is on par with a Athlon 1.4+AMD 760, but a 2.0 only makes up for what the athlon gains when SiS 735 is used. I'd go w/a 1.8.
