P4 1.7 Lockups

I've been upgrading my system piecemeal over the last two months and after the last set of upgrades have been getting a couple of recurring lockups. I was running :

P4 1.7
Asus P4S333
512MB 266 DDR
3.5GB & 10 GB Hard drives
Soundblaster Live
Midiman Delta 44
Geforce 2 MX

Now it's :

P4 1.7
Asus P4S333
512MB 266 DDR
10GB & 60GB Hard drives
Soundblaster Live
Midiman Delta 44
Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4200 128MB

Whilst thes system seems happily stable running Cubase for long sessions, within about half an hour of starting up any game, the system locks up entirely and has to be reset. When this happens it indicates a hardware error and in the Power screens shows that the VCore +12V is running at about 10.57 - what kind of problem does this indicate?

The other problem is that the somputer crashes at any attempt to shut down or reset and has to be manually turned off. From time to time it has said that the processor is set at the wrong speed, though it shows P4 1.7GHz on start-up.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated - is this a cooling problem, or is the Power supply not strong enough?

My guess is either your are overclocking and the agp frequency is out or more likely your power supply is not enough for your system.

Well, trotted out and bought a new PSU (300W) to replace the 200W one in there..... and it still crashes in games. I'm not overclocking at all.

Did manage to get rid of the bug that stopped me shutting down, as Gainward's ExpertTool was setting the screen refresh rate to 85Hz, whilst Windows wouldn't let it go above 60Hz - cue disagreements between the two. Am assuming it's some kind of problem with the graphics card now - maybe overheating.

The CPU is running at about 59 degrees - is this ok?

The CPU sounds like it's running a bit hot, but those 256K Williamettes were all hot chips. I'd say that the crashes are probably driver related, specifically the nVidia detonator drivers you're running. Which version of the detonator drivers are you running anyways? I've used the 23.12 and 28.32's with the greatest success. The newer 29.42's dont run that great on either of my GF3 Ti200's.

I am now assuming it is probably driver related if you are not overclocking and have a better powersupply, and hte problem is still occuring. Heck it could even be because of gainwards expert tool. Did you have that running on the other system?

I was hoping you may have solved your problem. I have had the same problem since my system was new 6 months ago. I am on my 2nd vid card and the problem is still there. My system is the same as yours in key areas. Asus P4S333 sis 645, P41.7 . I also have a GF4 4400 ,SB Audigy, 512 ddr. I have checked IRQ , AGP in Bios, updated drivers, disabled and tweaked. No heat problems , 300 w power. I can play drive and flight sims without trouble. I am chicken to update bios but I think the problem is there. This drives me absolutely nuts. SoF, NOLF, Max Payne, Deus Ex sit on the shelf.

I've had no joy, though was planning to get a different fan and hope that'll do some good - I wonder if the graphics card is overheating, as it's only crashing during 3d games - not ordinary windows. All else failing, it'll be back to the Geforce 2 MX and a trip to the computer shop.

Go to SiS.com and try the newest AGP driver. If that doesn't work, try the previous version.

I had a similar problem with my Ultra 645. Using an AGP driver two versions old fixed it.

And I also had the same shutdown problem. Never did figure that one out, but it wasn't a refresh rate issue.

My friends rig had the similar problem, but he only had the shutdown problem where some programs can't end...but simply clicking on end now would do the trick...but it does get annoying after awhile while trying to o/c, which requires tons of reboot.
