P4 1.6A or 1.8A?

If I am going to overclock, does it matter if I get the P4 1.6A or the 1.8A? I was leaning toward the 1.8A because it would either go higher or be less of a load on overclocking...

This is the rig I am thinking of setting up:

  • case + PS: Antec SX840 $117
  • m-board: Gigabyte 8irxp $127
  • processor: P4 1.8a $170
  • memory: Samsung 256 MB PC2700 $82
  • hard drive: 60 GB Maxtor ATA-133 7200 RPM $94
  • video card: GF4 4400 $242
  • cpu fan: Sunflower $34
  • mouse: MS Optical Intellimouse $27
  • keyboard: MS Internet Keyboard $27
  • scsi card: Tekram PCI $16
  • thermal paste: Arctic silver $12
  • speakers: Logitech Z540 $64
  • sound card: SB Live $29
  • OS: Win XP Pro Upgrade $89

Thanks!

Go 1.6a, the chance of reaching 133mhz fsb with a 1.6a is much higher than the 1.8a. I've built 3 P4 1.6a system's and only one made it to 133mhz fsb so I wouldn't push your luck.

actually i was thinking a bit more optimisticly then BDog231....

the 1.6A has a better chance of hitting 166fsb then a 1.8A.

😀

agrall yep - check out the CPU/OC forum. lots of us are getting 160+fsb rather easily with the correct motherboard. mine can max out @ 2864mhz 178fsb so far.

Is the motherboard I listed above good for overclocking?
