I currently have a P4 Northwood 1.6 overclocked to 2.13. I was wondering how much of an improvement I would get by replacing it with a Sempron 3100+ overclocked to 2.2. I do video encoding and some gaming. Thanks.

Huge difference in speed, especially with games! My overclocked Sempron 3100 is running at 2400MHz. 1M digits Super Pi is 38.6 seconds.

I thought so. I was considering building a new machine with the Fry's combo, new memory and case. The case I'm thinking about is this:

They have on sale for $39. What memory would be good for this setup.

The only problem with that case is the PSU. I would spend more on a good one, or you will be sorry when it either doesn;t work, or takes out your motherboard and other components.

According to the description of the case, the power supply has an enhanced +12 rail whatever that means. If you click on the pictures of the case, up pops more pics, one of which shows the ratings on the power supply. I'm not that knowledgable on the specs of a good power supply and how to read them. If the power supply for this case is not sufficient then I have a old case that I can just buy a power supply for.

You can try out the bundled PSU when you get it, and if it is not so good then buy a new quality one.

Definitely get a new PSU, I got a case that looked exactly like that from PC Club here, and the power supply inside wasn't UL certified and wouldn't even power a Duron 950.

Get the Antec SLK3000B for $48. I have the Sempron/ECS special from Fry's. Added the Zalman 7700Cu CPU cooler. The Sempron is running at 2400MHz with 1.46 Vcore. Room temp is 72F. CPU temp is 44C at 100% load. The case is dead silent at 1 meter.

The Corsair DDR400 Value Select (on sale last week at Fry's for $50 AR...2 x 512MB) will run at 2.5-3-3-5-1T with 5:6 (166MHz) memory divider up to about 273MHz. Avoid Kingston ValueSelect because this board cannot run a 2nd stick in DIMM2 at 1T. You must use 2T with Kingston.

Its never been addressed, so I havew to ask: Socket A sepron or 754?

actually it was addressed.

on normal office type things the processors that are rated the same perform about the same.

on games the 754 kills.

The PSu with that case should be alright for a sempron system, 19A on the 12v rail is good enough for it.

Only reason i would consider getting a better psu is to get a better brand one for realibility, but saying that:

i currently have a second comp with an athlon 3200+ at 2.4ghz on a generic POS 350w with 16A 12v rail running fine without a problem. In fact ive used this psu for half a year now, had to get it replaced half a year ago cause my bro desided to change the switch from 240v to 120v :p u know what happened next .... bang :p

It if was the other way round (120V to 240V) your entire PC would probably been dead.
