Hi,

I currently have the following in my box. Keep in mind, that I do not game, but use the computer daily for 'work' and rendering movies.

I am thinking of replacing much with the following and have real question about best mobo - P35 or X38 chipset:

mobo: Abit IP35 Pro or ASUS P5E
CPU: Q6600
RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR2 800 (PC6400) - 4 gig
Video Card: Asus GeForce 8800GTS 512MB (not sure if this is the best choice).

I also intend on 'reusing" the hard drives, sound card, the DVD/ROM Drives, the Tuniq Tower 120 Ultra Silent CPU cooler, and my 650W PS, unless I am given a reason to replace them as well.

Any guidance and/or ideas are greatly appreciated.

I would not waste $ on those Kingston modules. Regular Kingston N5 DDR2 800 should be fine. These are more compatible than the HyperX.

Unless you plan to run crossfire in the future, which it looks like you aren't, P35 is good enough. The extra money spent on X38 won't bring any real benefits. The new 8800GTS is a pretty good card, and you can actually get one, as opposed to 3 weeks ago with the 3870/8800GT vaporware situation. To save some cash, you could go with a 8800GT, but it looks like those are still in short supply.

Thanks.

thanks. One final question, I've just read that the g35 chipset will offer for hd-dvd and blu-ray decode accleration whereas the other chipset do not. Since I use the computer to render home movies (I have a $2k rendering program) and have recently bought a hd video camera, should I consider the g35 chipset?

That most likely in relation on onboard video. The 8800gt and gts are dx10-based, so the H.2.... is 100% covered by them. If you're looking for onboard, then the g35 info may be useful- but I wouldn't suggest that route. I would think rendering would deal with encoding as well- but I don't know much on that subject.

If you do not game, get a 8600gt or 8500 and save $150-200 over the 8800GTS 512.

At what point should one consider a workstation graphics card, like on of the NVidia Quadro cards? I'm just wondering and maybe someone could answer to help out the OP.
