P35 to P35 Mobo: WinXP re-install necessary?????

Hi,
I will be replacing my Intel DP35DP with the IP35 Pro MB. I have two HDDs in Raid 1, running Win XP SP2. CPU will be the same Q6600.

Since both MBs use the same chipset drivers, the same RAID drivers, and have the same Northbridge and Southbridges, is it really necessary to re-install Win XP?

Can I get away with just installing the LAN, audio and uGuru drivers?

Thanks,

M Javid.

XP is already on your HDD - I certainly would give it a try - what's to lose? If the new rig boots OK, then just use your new mobo CD to re-install everything you think you need - LAN, audio drivers, etc... If it doesn't boot, then you could try a Windows XP repair (at the second "R" screen with the XP CD). That frequently can handle slight differences from one machine to another. If neither method works, then you're in for a re-install.

Good luck,

Noel

If you follow this guide, you can swap motherboards (even AMD to Intel) without worry. Just be sure to follow the directions to the letter and it will work perfectly.

Good info for all of us. Thanks, Deinonych... I plan to bookmark this little gem.

After reading the guide, it seems that I won't have to do anything after swapping the MBs. I will post my results after the event.
Thanks,

As for the OP's question......you are correct in that there would be nothing to do. Same chipsets, same drivers. Only exception would be the onboard sound drivers and LAN, for instance, if they're different between the boards. Not all manufacturers use the same audio and LAN chips, for instance.

As far as changing mb between chipsets, I've done XP and Vista on such different chipsets as moving an Intel XP install from an X975 chipset mb to an Intel P35 chipset mb. NO guide, didn't do a thing other than connect the hd and boot after it was built. Miraculously, Windows recognized the difference between the chipsets and installed or asked for the appropriate drivers for the chips it found.......and had no issues at all.

Have moved installations between AMD/nVidia and Intel.....all without any issues. Moved an XP from an NF4 chipset to an Intel P965.....again, no issues other than making sure I had the driver CD on hand so Windows would be able to find all the appropriate drivers it needed.

People keep making this out to be so much more of an issue than it really is.....and it's no issue at all. Just let Windows do its thing.....it'll install/ask for the needed drivers when and if it needs them.

good link! I wasn't even looking for a thread about what you mentioned, but I am doing a rebuild of my system tomorrow and going from AMD to Intel, so this guide will be perfect. You rock man :)

generally no.

i think the only situation i could think of where it could be a problem is say if you had an ich7 board with a PATA hard drive and upgraded to ich9 based board. geenrally for any board, if it has the same or similar south bridge winxp wont care. this applies for like ati and nvidia chipsets too

Glad to help. For the record, I've used this guide several times, and it's flawless as long as you follow the directions carefully. :)

Well I set up the new motherboard, WinXP booted up and started installing various new hardware. Everything seemed to be going fine when I suddenly had BSOD while trying to arrange the desktop icons. I tried a re-boot but got a hang again and again.
I went into the BIOS and enabled RAID, but still a hang. Will try disconnecting one of my drives and configuring the remaining as 'IDE', but it looks like I will finally have to do a re-install or at least a 'repair'.

did 2 systems today using this method, one BSOD'ed when I tried to boot it, since the BSOD just flashed and I wasn't trying to figure out how to get it to stay I just reinstalled XP and was done with it. My system, I went from a 939 to 775 and it worked without a hitch. I could have done a repair install, but this was so easy and fast. Now I just gotta find some crap to download to test my c2d and see what it can do.

Try just installing the Chipset drivers for the new motherboard if it does not work.

Windows has some options for a repair install.

Final Post:
The new drivers were giving me problems installing and Win XP was freezing on bootup (I think this started after I installed JMicron e SATA drivers) so I panicked and re-installed Win XP.

I know! I'm planning on doing the exact same thing - moving from an AMD system to a P35 Intel system. It's good to know I don't necessarily HAVE to do a new install...
