I am looking at bulding my own rig and was wondering if I should go for p35 or x38. Although used to build them 10 yrs ago (which feels like pre historic times in computer world) but bought complete systems since then, so would see myself as a newbie.

Are there any X38 boards stable enough for a newbie to use or should I stick to P35.

Unless you really want to push the envelope in terms of performance, the P35 chipset is fine.

X38, and the upcoming X48 get you a few % increase in performance for a lot % increase in price, and possibly at the cost of some stability, from what I have been reading of late.

x38 boards start at about $240 now, and go up to $350:

Note though, that all those boards get essentially 5 star reviews.....that is a bit unusual for a new product.

A smattering of highly rated p35 boards:

At $70 or so after rebate, this board gets a lot of positive press:

i would go with the x38 because it supports the new upcoming pci-e 2.0 cards
and (just like some p35) support the new 45nm intel cpu (available in a month or two!).
