i installed a p3 370 1g chip in my moms dell xps-b 733 system and the system just shutsdown when i try to start it? its an intel 820 chipset board, i pulled everything but the cpu,ram & vid card from the board and still it shuts down within 10 seconds, cant get into the sys bios at the dell screen even, as thats where it shutsdown. i tried setting the jumper to config on the motherboard still no go? this system was offered at 1g p3 config so i know the board & bios support it. the 733 says 1.65 volts and the 1g says 1.7 volts both 133/256 cpu's..
anyone have any tricks.
Thanks much

You will need to check directly w/Dell on whether that system will take the cpu or not. Typically, they will "sell" support to XXXMHz on a system but it will not be included on every system they build. Dell, and others, use different MB's in almost every model and those MB's and respective BIOS will only take you so far. If you order a Dell XXXX system that is advertised up to 1 GHz, but you buy one that is running @ 733, there is a VERY real possibility that your MB only supports up to 766 or 866. It suxx but they can and do get away with this because you did not buy a 1 GHz, you bought a 733. Upgradeability is not guaranteed with them. The best place to start would be with Dell support so that using your Service Tag # (on a barcode on the back of your system) they can track down your exact MB and upgrade possibility. They have this info archived so that even if it has been years, you will still be on file. Then they can also point you to specific web pages that will show your upgrade paths. Another place to start would be on their DellTalk Forum. I spent some time here years back and there are always some very "Dell knowledgable" folks there, along with a moderator or two.
