I was OCing my P3 700e cB0. Runs fine and solid at 933mhz. When i tried to up it further i got a windows message about my display settings being changed or something (i'll write it down next time) I rebooted and got a message that windows is going to use the last good registry used and will reeboot. Is this message OC related and what component should i check.

well intell is having trouble producing many 1Ghz chips so deopending how close you are to it you may have reached the cpu limit... what voltage are you running it at? have you tryied anything higher? is your cooling adiquate?

you didn't say what bus speed you where getting this error on, but it may be your ram has hit its limit.
are you running it at cas2 or cas 3? if it is cas 2 try it at cas 3 and see it helps...

Yeh, its overclock related. open the bios during boot, and set it back to where it works, and let it boot. Do this acouple of times to get good registry history files. Set back the sdram timing, check the agp setting and everything else in the bios before trying higher bus speeds again- Windows is trying to tell you something, maybe not so nicely the next time.

Everytime windows complained about the registry and had to restore it to a good version, it was a memory problem. This last time, it was because I didnt have my memory seated correctly, or very well for that matter. I'd look there.

Ok, At 933 it runs fine at Cas2, default voltage.

At 980 at Cas2, default voltage i get the registry error

At 980 at Cas3, default voltage it runs fine

At 1008 at Cas3, voltage +7.5% for a total of 1.77 it runs 3dmark but after some heavy Quake III it freezes.

Im using the stock heatsink and fan. I need sugestions on alternative heatsinks (is it hard to remove the stock HS/fan?)

The memory is the infinieon at memory man. It looks like it cant do Cas2 above 138 FSB. Here is something interesting, at 933 Cas2 3Dmark is 7083, At 980 Cas3 it is only 7125, it looks like the Cas setting has a big effect. I would like to see some PC133 that can do Cas2 at 144 FSB.

You gotta get a rev.2 Mosel Vitalic to run 144+ @ cas2. Got mine running @ cas2 144 right now. Have to swith back to cas3 somewhere between 150 & 155. You're right though, performance @ cas2 is a kick in the pants compared to cas3. :D

Eric D:
Assuming you're running a flipchip (and not a slot1),
Get yourself an Alpha 6035 cooler with Sunon fan (3DFXCool.com for instance).
This enabled my 700 to run at 933/133, default voltage.
If you feel brave and want to go further, my current system:
P3-700/100 @ 1029/147 , 1.70 V VCore
Alpha 6035 with 55W Leufkens Peltier with custom 50mmx50mmx4.5 mm Copper Cold plate.

I also added an extra blowhole in the side of my case, directly above the Alpha's exhaust, adding a 120 mm exhaust fan. This creates a Venturi-type windtunnel, which forcefully exhausts the hot air away from the CPU/Peltier.
This system runs at 80 deg F / 27 deg C at 100% load (Quake3, UT, SETI or 3DMark2000).
SETI is running as I write this.
I could probably go higher, but my MSI 6309 MoBo is unstable above 147 fsb.

Good luck.

Eric D according to BXboards, the new Corsair cas 2 pc 133 will do 150 MHz at cas 2 and 160 at cas 3 on a Soyo 7VCA. It uses Crusial / Micron memory so i guess the Crusial cas 2 may perform similarly. All you got to do is buy one of those Corsair sticks. Lets us now how they do !?

The Crucial PC133 CL2(same as the Corsair stuff) will do 150 Cas2 for me... I haven't tried any higher yet.

In that case, go take a look at www.3dfxcool.com and look at their alpha cooler combo's for the slot 1 P3.
I have one running on my old P3-450.
You can still install a peltier on that combination later on, if you wish to do so.
And the extra 120 mm fan thing still works, because the Alpha fans blow the hot air upwards (away from the MoBo), to the side of the case.

If you want PC133 CAS 2-2-2 from Crucial, look for the last two characters of the 168-pin DIMM part number to be 7E.

Here's what they've currently got for CAS 2-2-2:

64MB - CT4M64S4D7E or CT8M64S4D7E or CT8M72S4D7E
128MB - CT16M64S4D7E or CT16M72S4R7E
256MB - CT32M64S4D7E

My chip reached 980Mhz (cBO week 16 Malay)before the peltier condensed all over the chip and ruined it :). Got a bigger chip now,
way better and safer cooling.
