P3-550 - get away w/just a CPU HS and no fan?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my testbed at home to help me study for my 2003 Server MCSE course.

I rebuilt my main server...borderline noisy. I want another box to play with. I have my old Dell that I'm going to throw it's P3-550 back into. It has one fan (in the PS) that's it.

I have a FOP32 that will fit...Socket 370/Socket A, same thing, right? Anyway, I want the box to be dead quiet. Being that the FOP is much bigger than the Foxconn HSF that came on the Dell, could I get away w/just the HS and no fan? Thanks; finding a quiet 60mm fan is not easy and I don't want to spend any money. *squeak*

I wouldn't run it without a fan, no matter how big a sink you could put in the case.
It's not advisable to put just a heatsink on any cpu since about the very early k62's or perhaps an old PII.
Someone might tell you different, but I wouldn't want to fry my cpu in the case. You could always suspend a cheap 80mm fan or 70mm fan over the cpu.

My guess is you will be fine. Also, be careful with the FOP32...while similar, Socket A HSF's aren't always compatible with S370. I am working on someone's old Dell that has a P3-500 (Slot1)that only has a HS on it and a fan in the rear of the case.

🙂

Thanks guys.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that SocketA and Socket370 are idential, size-wise. I.E. size of the socket, postion of the lugs, etc.

I guess I can give it a shot.

Ohhhhh, crap!! Waitaminute!!! I just remembered something. 😀

I have an Iwill BD133 mobo, which is a 100/133FSB mobo. That P3550 will do 5.5 x 133 = 731MHz. 😀 at stock voltage. 😀

That will make a NICE little box. But then I'd need a fan for sure...as well as a case...which I have...but it's another full tower. Screw it. You only live once, right? I would need to find a quiet 60mm fan for the HS. The YS Tech fan I have on the FOP now is a 6K rpm screamer. :Q

Hmm. 550MHz at no noise or 731MHz with a little noise and a faster FSB? 😕

Hehe ok, you got me there. I wasn't really including slot cpus, since I have an old P3 733 slot
with a foolish big heatsink on it. Is the cpu a slot? cause some have active while some have passive cooling.

Nopers. Socket 370. 🙂 One of the first P3's IIRC. 🙂
