P3-1GHz w/ 512 RAM, Win2Kpro feels slow in regular Windows tasks Help me pls!

hi, i got a new job a couple of weeks ago and my pc there is a p3-933 overclocked to 1GHz, i815 mobo, 512MB of ram and an nvidia vanta 16MB. the thing runs Windows 2000 Pro and sounds like a nice setup but it feels slower than the celeron533(mendocino), BX, 288MB ram and tnt2pro 32MB. like when i move windows (with show window contents enabled) it gets chunky.. or what's the word for that.. 🙂 and also i have turned off Smooth scrolling in IE (version 5.0) but some pages, which cover the entire screen (1280x1024) scroll very slowly.. the scrollbar can't keep up with my mouse cursor - i move it down and the window scrolls smoothly, trailing behind. at home I'm also using win2kpro and I don't have this problem. the system admin says he doesn't know either.. could it be the Vanta 16MB? although I doubt that.. previously i had Savage3D (at home), which is slower than the vanta and didn't have that problem (in win2k too), our admin also doesn't think it's the video card. another piece of info is that i'm logged as a regular User, or a SuperUser at most, compared to admin at home, does it make any difference? any input is greatly appreciated! thanks in advance 🙂

Your Admin might not think it's the video card, but I think it is. That's a high res for such a small card to perform nicely.

it's not a clean install, and i think there are plenty of services running.. dunno exactly.

so if it's the video card, will a gf2mx200 make any difference? for now i don't think that changing hardware is really an option but maybe when my trial period is over i can get it upgraded, if you guys are certain it's the video. i'll try nudging down the res. to see if it really makes a difference, cause if the problem still persists i don't think it would be the vanta - as i mentioned before i had a savage3d at home running 1024x760 perfectly fine and windows was snappy.

on a side note, could there be some bios settings that may affect windows video performance?

aand another question not directly related to the topic of the post. will the vanta be able to support 1280x1024@32bit@100Hz? my monitor supports it, or atleast CTX claims so on their websiite (the monitor is a CTX PR960F and at the moment runs 1280x1024@32bit@85Hz).

Two things:

1) its the Vanta or the drivers installed for the Vanta

2) the IDE channels are not set to UDMA and thats causing the lag whenever the Hard Drive is accessed.

so what are good, stable MS approved drivers for the vanta? are they the same as those for TNT2?
i'll check on the UDMA setting but i doubt it's that.. the thing with the scrolling is mostly in IE 5.0 and Outlook Express 5.0
 
I have the same setup at work! I have the 933 and 256 meg ram Intel 815 as well with a 16 meg Vanta running Win 2k pro. It is a lot slower than my computer at home, but I dont think it is anywhere near as bad as your setup is performing.

My screen res is at 1024 X 768 and it works fine!
 
That set up should handle windows with ease, so don't be so quick to replace anything. You've got to diagnose the system first. Check out the "My Computers" properties and go in the device manager. See if there are any "!" This would mean a hardware conflict in your system. If there are SCSI drivers for example on your system, your system could be looking for a SCSI device and cause the slowdowns. There are countless possibilities.
Also under system properties, check performance. A normal system will say that everything is working properly. I've had slowdowns like yours before when my system was running in 16 bit DOS mode instead of 32. If that is the case, it'll say so there.

Also, you can try this website --http://www.pcpitstop.com/-- it's not a bad assessment tool.

Also, is your hard drive defragmented? I once say a drive so fragmented that it couldn't defrag, so we had to reformat it.

You can also try using Watchdog which you can access through system configuration, run scandisk thorough to mark and ignore bad sectors.

UDMA is on for the HDD, no conflicts, installing intel app. accel. is hardly an option, I just wanted to get to the root of the problem and I think I figured it out.. my guess is the Vanta, as many already have mentioned. I tried 1024x768@32bit and large windows (with contents showing turned on) moved more smoothly, as they did in 1280x1024@16bit. so probably it's the Vanta

on a side note, what's exactly the Vanta LT? and does anyone know whether the Vanta memory bus is 64bit or 128?

you can overclock the proc but cant install intel app accelerator?

it makes a huge difference IMO and great increases performance of the IDE subsystem

though my Northwood @ 2.4 ghz was never slow to begin with 🙂

1) You have to do a CLEAN INSTALL of WIN2k and get Service Pack 2 no matter what (with enough experiences I swear to god this is 97% of the problem)
2) Your video card driver(2.99%)
3) Your video card is not capable of processing daily windows tasks(0.01%)

I agree. If DMA is enabled and the driver is not the problem it might be a confused registry because it's not a clean install. If the drivers are correct, I'd suspect a Vanta should be fine for 2D speed at that resolution. Is your registry polluted by other video driver settings?

On a side node, when my Voodoo 3 fried itself I stuck the only card I had sitting around, for Windows 2000. It was a 10 year old Trident ISA card. Now THAT is slooooowwwww, and 256 colours only.
 
it already got service pack 2. udma enabled.
I still think it's the Vanta. I played with lower resolution/colordepth settings and found out that it performs much better in those compared to my current res. 1280x1024@32bit..
anyone know whether the Vanta is a 64bit bus? and can the video card drivers make huge difference in 2D performance? thanks!
 
Im telling you it is not the Vanta! I have a vanta at work and the thing works great! I would have believed that the Intel 815 int video is the culprit, but not an external vid card!

cool, can you try setting your windows to 1280x1024@32bit/85Hz (dunno if the Hz makes any difference) and see if when dragging a large window (with show contents enabled) it's smooth? if it is that would rule out the vanta at once.. that would be nice.. and I thank you in advance 😉

I'm telling you this because you said that you're using it in 1024x768 and when I tried that res myself it moved smoother and overall windows video perfomance was much better (compared to 1280).
