This will be for a fileserver/media box not much of anything else execpt a lan box maybe, I would like to get a northwood but I am limited by the supplier(Parts for work deal) and that is what they have, I just do not know which to get? The P3 will actually cost a little more but not that much. P4 will go on a 845 board and P3 an 815.

And yes I know the northwood cost no more the the other but as I said I am limited to what they have.

I have and use the P3 1266 ( 512 L2 ) ver and love it very fast ( don't use servers but it does avg seti wu in around 2.5 to 3 hrs ) but they also have a P3 1.4 ( 512 L2 ) that cost almost 400 bucks..... http://www.mwave.com/

I say you can't go wrong with the P3 so it's really all about the cash dude!

Do the chips run the same $$$? You'll probably have better choice of motherboards with the P4, but you're still limited by your supplier, right? If you can do a P4 board with DDR, that'll probably be the best (you specified 845, not 845D?). The P4 would have more of a future in case of upgrades.

Hey Idoxash

What kind of mainboard do you use with that 1.26 tualatin?

Tried to install one on my Soyo SY-TISU today but no luck!

400fsb as opposed to 100fsb the p4 Willamette with 256 cache I think would be better than the p3 with 512 cache!! Good luck on whatever you use!!

the p3 tualtins are sweet. The original p4's are really weak IMO. the p3 would definetly be better my 1 gig morgan 10x133 (64kb cache) beets a 1.6 p4 chip. cache and IPC are really important, NW's and tuals both have 512k cache...and itaniums have something like 4 megs isn't it? the p4 has nominal cache and horendous IPC...Tualitan all the way.

How about getting the 815 board and a Tualatin Celeron? They have only 256k cache, but that's twice what they had before. Yesterday I did an incremental upgrade from a Celeron 1.0A to 1.1A, running at 1.46GHz beautifully for only $65 (Newegg).
