Hello All,

Recently my cpu temperature seems to be extremely high. I am getting 78-80 C in bios and when using Sandra as soon as I start up. I am using the Intel fan and heatsink that came with the cpu and it is spinning around 3600 rpm. I have opened the side of the case and used a house fan to blow air directly at the cpu and it didn't lower the temp. It looks like my voltage isn't right also. The 12v is running about 13 and the 5v is running at 2-2.5v. I can check the 12v and bios but the not the 5v so I am using Sandra to check it. I suspected my power supply ( a 250w ) so I borrowed my wife's 300 w but I got the same voltage readings. I am trying to find out if the problem is with the mobo or the cpu. I took out the mobo and cpu and replaced them with an older mobo with a P3 500 slot but kept the same memory, power supply, hard drive, etc and it is all working just fine, so I am pretty sure that the problem is either the mobo or the cpu. I don't overclock. The only other problem that I have had with this motherboard is that it won't work if I set the memory bus to 133mhz even though the memory is 133mhz, I have to set it to 100 to get windows to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System specs for what I am trying to get to run:

250 w power supply
Soyo 7IS2 mobo
2 x 256mb sticks PC133 SDRAM (Crucial)
P3 1.0 ghz (socket 370)
PNY Ti4200 64mb AGP
60 gig Western Digital
SB Live 5.1
Netgear Lan card
Hitachi DVD player
I/O Magic 24x cd-writer

I would guess your heatsink is not sitting on there properly. Are you using any thermal paste? My slightly overclocked dual P3's run low 40's under full load, and that is with extremely cheap heatsinks (<$1.25).

Yes I am using thermal paste. Just a small amount on the die of the cpu chip. This system was off for over 24 hours and when I turned it on I went straight into Bios and it was already 76 C and has maintained that temp for a while now with going up or down. Here is a snapshot of my dashboard from MM5. Notice the 5v reading, it is only 3v. I get the same with the 250w PSU and a 300w PSU. Also, the first temp is pretty low. I also touched the memory, mobo chipset, and the around the cpu heatsink, etc and didn't feel anything that was close to being 76 C. I am wondering if the temp data isn't being read correctly. ?????

Thanks for you help.

I also vote poor hsf/cpu contact.
are you using both thermal paste & the thermal pad which came with the hsf??

well, the quick check to see if its reading it wrong would be simple.

obviously 78-80C would be extremely hot to the touch. so..touch the heatsink. if its extremely hot then that meansthere is contact with the cpu and it is reading it correctly.

if its not hot then either ...

not in contact with cpu
or not reading it correctly

I'd say it's not being reported correctly. At that kind of temp on a P3, it should be locking up.

None of the components felt hot to the touch. I checked around the heatsink, the dimms, mobo chipset, etc. The only thing that felt hot was the video card. So I don't think the temperature is correct. Is that a mobo problem or cpu problem? I am still trying to figure out about the 5v rail and why it is so low.

Thanks for the input.

well, then either the heatsink isn't correctly on or its reading it incorrectly.

I'd try reseating the heatsink with a fresh dose of AS3 and see what happens.
