I'm building a new muscle/budget PC.

On my budget, I can either go for: 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 (HT) 800 MhZ FSB + 1024 MB DDR RAM PC3200 (2 x 512)

Or: 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 (HT) 800Mhz FSB + 512MB DDR RAM PC3200 (2x 256)

Whuch would give me better performance? I want to use the rig mostly for games and digital arts using Photoshop, Fireworks & stuff.

Thanks for the comments

get the 2.4c 800 or 2.6c 800 for a lot less money, then overclock the front side bus to 250 and get 3.0Gigahertz easily, with the money you save on the processor get 2 512meg PC 4000 memory modules. Intel CPU's love the bandwith, make sure of the AGP and PCI lock on the motherboard. The stock cooler should handle it no problem. Don't get the Prescott get the Northwood

OC to 3.0 speeds, and waaaa laaa, saved a few bucks and get the most performance.

For games, loads RAM isn't quite as important (speed can help), but I wouldn't bother going for less than 1GB if you plan on doing any halfway serious graphics work. I'm stuck with a 512MB working with programs like Maya, Photoshop, After Effects, etc. 512 really is hardly adequate these days, and even less so when doing heavy multitasking (which I do all the time).

I'll be upgrading to a (hopefully) overclocked 3.0c from 1.6@2.2 p4, and I'm going to TRY to get by with 1GB PC3700 for now. I really ought to get 2GB, but I don't want to fill my banks up yet. I'm hoping the 1GB dimms will drop in price in the next few months so I can upg to a total of 3GB RAM.

Loads of RAM is very important for any modern game. As an example, Battle Field Vietnam loads MUCH MUCH faster on systems that have 1GB of RAM versus 512MB.

I'd go for the 1GB ram over 200MHz in CPU speed anyday.

Another vote for the 2.8Ghz+Gig of RAM. You won't miss the 200Mhz when your games are running butter smooth.

It's a no brainer!
