This is just too funny.
NBC has been trying alot lately to get congress to pass bills on p2p file sharing claiming everything from terrorist to child pornography.

Now it seems they also claim that since people are downloading movies they are not buying the popcorn at the theaters so its hurting the american farmer who grows the popcorn.

"In the absence of movie piracy, video retailers would sell and rent more titles. Movie theatres would sell more tickets and popcorn. Corn growers would earn greater profits and buy more farm equipment

Wow that's great, as if people won't eat more popcorn at home where it doesn't cost 5 bucks a bag.

Why don't they toss in the 10% ethanol used to drive there and the HFCS used in the candy and sodas while they are at it?

Errr... what? The price of Corn has been rising due to the demand from ethanol. If anything, it would be movie theaters that would be suffering, not corn farmers.
