p2p apps don't work for me

Red Squirrel

I don't know why, but any p2p app I try to use, even bittorrent, it just never works. 1 in 100 downloads will actually start. It's horrible. I've tried everything from setting a machine in the DMZ zone to forwarding huge blocks of ports to a dedicated machine (static IP). No luck watsoever.

Is it just me having so many issues or is it p2p in general that simply sucks now?

I remember back in the day being able to search for something on morpheus double click on it, and it actually starts downloading, and it finishes. Now, I never get that, no matter what program I use.

No home network, just a linksys router. I'm thinking it may be that, but thing is I'm not the only person in the world behind a router so no reason why I should be getting problems while others don't.

Shareaza, bittorrent, winmx, direct connect, kazaa lite, edonkey, emule, can't remember others. Basically anything I find that's proven to not have junk in it like spyware, I'll try it.

Since the whole riaa issue with morpheus I've been having this problem. Back in those days kazaa was good and so was morpheus.

Oh, I forwarded 1000-60000 to that PC, still, nothing. I can connect, and get tons of search results, but downloads just don't start. direct connect and winmx won't even connect at all anymore, they used to though. opennap connects though.

If I do manage to get a download to start, it only stays active for a couple of minutes then dies and never starts again.

Edit: hmm not a good idea to forward so many ports, been receiving messenger spam, and that means other windows services are probably exposed, opening a security hole to not only that machine (big deal as I can just revert to a snapshot) but my whole network. (ouch)

That said what are windows ports anyway? such as COM, RPC etc and any other system ports I should be aware of and ensure not to forward.

Weird suddently it's working better now. I left it running for a couple of days straight so maybe it just takes a while to establish all the connections. still can't connect to DC or WinMX network though but since Shareaza is working it's all I need, I usually dont run multiple p2p apps at once.

But I still have a huge block of ports forwarded, so how can I make sure this machine is secure and that I did not forward windows service ports like rpc and such? I know windows uses port 137 and 139 for netbios but I'm not sure of any other ports I should ensure not to forward.

you're generally safe with a port range between 20,000 to 50,000. most p2p apps only require one port to be opened to function properly (you can set this in the options of most programs). some bittorrent clients (mainline, bittornado) are the exception and need to have an open port for each client window open.
