I have an old P2 board laying around w/ memory and Ethernet. I am planning on building a dedicated server for counter strike, and I heard that you can run a server with a p2 and a bit of RAM. I was wondering if that will work, or will it flop.

If that doesn't work, I will use it for a file server for my house. (I need one BAD)

Specifics about your P2, like clock speed, and motherboard you are using. How much RAM?

As far as running a counter strike dedicated server, I don't know much about that, but I would think your hardware is lacking for that cause. If you don't do that and want to use it as a file server, I hope you are looking at Linux to do that. I ran Ubuntu Feisty Server 7.04 on a Athlon XP 2600+ based machine with grand results. It's been a long time since I've touched a P2 so dunno the results with that.

EDIT: Just a side note, a friend of mine resurrected some old hardware and tried Ubuntu Feisty and it didn't work. He back peddled a little and did Edgy and it worked for him. He was running a P3 450Mhz though.

Processor/CPU power: To run a Source dedicated server you need at least a 1.0Ghz Intel CPU or equivalent. This will run a basic server with 20 slots at a good level of performance.

Memory: To run a normal server you will need at least 512MB RAM, you might need to restart the server every once in a while to clean up the memory. 1GB is enough to run over 60 player slots total.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth is used a lot?more specifically, upload bandwidth. Here is a list of how fast your connection must be to run a certain number of players at lowest settings. (When talking about bandwidth for servers we always talk about upload, not download.) Note: these numbers are theoretical, your results may vary slightly!"

at best i think a p2 could run as a file server.
p2 was pretty damn slow.

If the server is based on a Windows Client OS it would be limit to 10 concurrent connections.

In any case, before you discuss hardware you have to decide on the server OS, and what is the load that your are expecting.

Any P2 box, no matter how "juiced up" won't work well at all as a game server. It's just too slow/old. Now, as a FILE server, you would be good to go (as long as you don't plan on streaming HD Video from it).

I had a P3-550MHz/1GB RAM that I used as a FTP box/Unreal Tournament (original! :D) server for LANs way back when and it was great. How great that box would be w/modern games is probably laughable though.

I'm all for recycling older hardware; good on you for the thought! Make yourself a file server; that CPU/system is still good for something. :)

well generally its not worth the effort because if something breaks replacing the part will be a hassle and all your install/setup is wasted.

How true. Didn't think of that at all. And that's what happened on my legacy hardware for my kids. A search for an AGP NForce Mobo was tough work.

I think it has 720 MB of ram, It's clock is somewhere around 300MHz

I was planning on running SoL - Server optimized Linux as the OS
