1. You can put whatever Linux version that you like. Personally, I'd put RedHat since I've been using it.
2. You can make it as whatever server that meets your needs.
3. You need to have a CD-ROM to install Linux, right? I used my 52X CD-ROM to install RedHat, then I removed the CD-ROM. I have a P133, 96MB RAM, 4.3GB HDD, and it seems ok to me. It depends on what you want to do with it. Of course you can't use it as a commercial web-server.
4. You can set it up as a file-server for your MP3 storage.

slackware linux, since you only have a P150, the new GUI will definitely slow you down.

actually, if you're really l33t, you can just do a network install. saves you some work on installing/uninstalling a cd-rom drive. and you might learn a thing or two about networking.

I think the only thing that is lacking is drive space. I have mine servng all types of files. from movie clips to mp3's. 3 gigs worth of stuff can get snemic quick. I solved this with a PCI IDE card and added a couple of lerger drives (not raid, just storage) . My rig is running Win2k on a cyrix PR333 with 96 megs of ram. The boot HD is 900mb and all the other files are on the other two drives. No problems... Good luck.
P.S. I like Red hat too... Easy to setup, just had no driver support for my particular PCI IDE card... Promise has them now, but I have a working server now, why take it down and redo it all....

redhat or mandrake would probably be you're best bet if your new. However I would just make it a bare bones install (no kde or gnome) as that will slow it down significantly. You can install webmin to administer it if you need some sort of GUI.

it can be an ftp server, can run apache as your webserver. If you want an mp3 server, install apache, php, then download andromeda to use as your mp3 server. It's a fairly easy setup.

If you're just wanting something to play around with, I wouldn't worry about upgrading anything. I've got a p166 (165 megs RAM) on redhat 7.2 running apache, lotus notes domino server, secure shell and an mp3 server. The box runs like a champ.
