I have been using winRAR mainly because i liked it a lot more that winZIP about a year ago. I haven't used or even look at winZIP in a long time.

But which do you think is better and why?

If you never used winRAR or winZIP you can download them there

hopefully you have used one

I like the old, free PowerArchiver program - the new one is shareware / adware unfortunately.

However, I don't think it compresses RAR as well as WinRAR.

Wow, zero votes for WinZIP. I remember using that way back when. I didn't know of anything else. WinRAR is good. 🙂 I used WinACE for a while and don't like it.

i hate rars. damned multimedia news servers. yEnq should help cut down on the lines, which is good.

I kept a copy of powerarc6, right before they switched to shareware... It's awesome, free, and totally legal to use indefinitely.

winace sucks ass. can't handle .rars very well isn't very intuitive.

Winrar is the way to go. handles everything, breaks things into chunks, has .PAR support which rocks, and is WAYYY faster.

thats funny... it's handled every rar i ever thrown at it... except the ones where the download got screwed.

I use a combination of tar, gzip and bzip2 🙂

I also use info-zip when I need to unpack stuff from or pack stuff for a windows user.

Amen, I used WinZip back when I was a noob until one day I stumbled upon a .ace archive, said wtf, and got WinAce. Haven't looked back since.

WinAce is by far the best I have used of any archiver (generally meaning WinZip and WinRAR). I like the interface and the features. Everything seems to be natural to me. If you'd spend more than 10 seconds in it, you'll find everything you need. It has never failed to open anything other than of course corrupted archives.

WinAce is fast enough for me, I have never noticed a real difference in compression/decompression time between the various programs. It has volume (chunk file) support as well, and as for .PAR's... well I've never even heard of those so I can't comment. If the format becomes mainstream though I'm sure WinAce will add support for it.

tar/gzip.

Sometimes bzip2 (but only for un bzipping things). Sticking to .tar.gz or .zip is a good thing because thats what most people already have support for.

WinRar. It's better, IMO, at handling multiple files in a single volume, but it's also much better handling multiple zipped files not in the same volume.
