Wow, i think 100% of the people coming into this thread had the words "skin" and "flute" in no particular order floating through their heads.

Pan pipes != flute!

I once saw Camel in concert...

Anyway, the flute is not too bad especially if you have played one of its relatives (saxophone, recorder, pennywhistle, etc).

I'm not sure what Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull plays, but for a beginner, I would recommend starting with almost any closed-hole flute. You should be able to get a decent one for under $200. If you buy used try to find one that is free of dings especially around the mouthpiece, still has the tuning screw, and has decent pads.

i used to play it. along with every brass and woodwind my school had to offer. and bass guitar also.
course that was 1984-1990 (7th thru 12th grades)
yup i was a hardcore band geek

not sure what a good deal is on flute, id just use common sense.
If you really wanted go the nice way get one of the Silver flutes. yes its real Silver. rather pricey but it can make a better sound. of course thats what they say. personally i never found any difference.

very nice blue colored one ---> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em&category=10183&item=7319026261&rd=1
here is a nice one and CHEAP also ---> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em&category=10183&item=7319430079&rd=1 <--- if you miss this he probably has tons more

flute can be a very mellow slowly played instrument, one of relaxaction and romance, or it can be upbeat and fast. and there are some very talented flute players.
Not to mention Ron Burgandy played it hehehe.

then why is it called the pan flute? it goes by either name.

"...and this one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute up my..." we all know how that one went right? saw flute and that popped into my head

yeah, i fully expected the gay jokes, no problem 😛

I think a good parody thread would be something like "I wanna take up glass blowing" and ask for tips on that.

Remember where you are!

Unless you spend over $200 on a flute off of ebay, it generally won't be good. There is some random company in china that makes all kinds of instruments, then sells them on ebay under about 10 different names for cheap prices. The quality is extremely low.

So, if you do buy an instrument off of ebay, make sure it is a name brand, or else you are setting yourself up for a disapointment.

Some example brands to stay away from:
ROSSETTI
RAISON
LAVAL
TRISTAR
WEIMAR

Go into a freezer and learn to play there. When you can see your breath you can really direct it into the mouthpeice. Once you learn that you can leave the freezer.

Can anyone point me on Ebay to a deal on a flute to learn on?
What type does Ian Anderson play?

You asked for all the ragging you're gonna get. 😀
