Currently I have an older Elph 5MP. It's time for an upgrade but I really like that the camera came with a battery and a charger. That means I didn't have to buy my own rechargables and what have you.

Is there still an option like that out there? Or will I just have to suck it up, do something new and get some eneloopwhatchacallits?

The LZ8 is one of the few Panasonic models that takes AAs. Some people don't like that, but many people DO like this feature since you can just go to any convenience store and grab a set of AAs when your batteries die. You also have the option of using a $5 set of rechargeable AAs instead of buying a $50 replacement battery when your camera's expensive Lithium Ion battery dies after 3 years.

That said, most manufacturers no longer use AAs, but two of the best budget models, the Canon A590 IS and Panasonic LZ8, still do.

none of the cigarette pack sized cameras can use AAs, so they don't. plenty of cameras under $150 that use a proprietary battery. i wouldn't spend more than $150 on any camera the size of a deck of cards. so, there are some sonys, some panasonics, and some canons. they're all pretty similar, and all pretty decent. the panasonics tend to have wider lenses, the sony's use memory stick.
