Working on my daughter's computer. I have to choose between a P-820 or an x2 3600. they arent going to be overclocked. I am thinking the x2 will be a better choice. The intel board wont support a c2d so thats not an option. only options are the two processors i listed.

Yeah, the 3600+ is a faster CPU. On that note, the Brisbane @ 1.9 GHz is faster than the Windsor @ 2.0 GHz, so, when you're choosing between the two, try to get the Brisbane if it's available.

That said, something in your post struck me: You say that your motherboard will not support Core 2 Duo, implying that it would support a Pentium D 820. If I understand you correctly that means you already have an LGA775 system--which in turn means that, at worst, you're running a Celeron D 325 (2.53 GHz). If that is the case, I wouldn't bother upgrading if you can't do better than an X2 3600+. Just wait until at least you have enough to get an E6320 or better.

yes, i also think you should get the x2. and i also think you should get the brisbane. the windsor 3600 only has 2x256kb l2 cache, whereas the brisbane has the regular 2x512kb. however, since the windsor has a 10x multiplier, it runs ddr2 800 ram at 400mhz whereas the brisbane would run it at 380mhz. ddr2 400/533/667 would all run slower than 200/266/333 on either chip, though; the brisbane would run ddr2 667 at ~316 whereas the windsor would run it at 285. although these won't make a huge difference, it's something you should know in advance. however, overall i'd still say go with the brisbane regardless because the extra cache would more than compensate for any differences in ram speed, assuming you were to use ram that the brisbane would run slower than the windsor.
