P-3 866 VP6 Dual processor Mobo

I have a p3 866 and a golden orb fan... i decided to mess around with overclocking, not knowing what i was doing. I increased the FSB by 20... and with a multiplier of 6.5 that yielded me an increase of 130 mhz.... giving me a system with a 996 speed. I was greedy and wanted to break 1000 MHz... so i was foolish and increased the FSB to 23 and the system wouldn't boot. I didnt change the voltage at all... and now i think i may have fried my processor... the blue top looks like it may have melted... and the system wont boot now. My question... is it dead... and if i need a new processor, i will be getting either another 866 or a 933.... what should i do to overclock these and how high cna i go?

Remember... i know hardly anything about overclocking and dont want to "burn" another 200+ dollars.

Thanks

My friend told me something about taking a thing that was shorting 2 pins, moving it to short 2 other pins and then return it... i think he said that would reset it... i did it both while powered and not powered. ?

Thanks

are you asking or telling us what you did?
you should always disconnect the power supply whenever you intend to do anything inside the case! if you can't find the jumpers which to short, temporarily remove the battery which effectively does the same thing ie reset the bios to factory default settings!

i did do the pins thing, but i'll try the battery tip.... other than that i dont know what to do. Also, if i do get new processor or if i do get it to work again... what settings should i go to to break 1Ghz? i got it to 996Mhz without changing voltage... do i have to increase voltage to get it up beyond that? i had left it at the default of 1.65?

Thanks

Corsairpro,

"i decided to mess around with overclocking, not knowing what i was doing" Not good!

You could have asked around in here before you did; I'm sure somebody would have given you advice.😉

"...something about taking a thing that was shorting 2 pins, moving it to short 2 other pins and then return it... - ...i did it both while powered and not powered..." Not good, either!

Anyway, those jumpers are really close to the battery, did you get the right ones? Make sure you unplug the power supply before doing it again.

If you get your system to work again (I truly hope you do!), make sure you have good cooling before you start overclocking! The ORB would not be my first choice...

For now, just yank out that Pentium and put it into a different system to see if it's still working. Then, ask questions first, and take it from there.🙂😉

Good luck!
